Is there a brand of tractor that ran a chrysler flathead six?

A friend a mine says he has an older tractor that has a Chrysler flathead six. He will give it to me for near nothing, but its a 200 mile drive. Said it did run 10 years ago. He also said the pto shaft had a chain to run the rear axle? Sounded like a homemade job to me. Anyone have a clue what type it might be.

Thanks

Dave D - Texas

Seems to me like the custom tractor ran a chrystler 6 cylinder engine. They were made in the early 50's I believe and did very good in tractor pulls. If that is what it turns out to be, it would be worth a 200 mile drive. Of course any FREE tractor is worth driving for. May be something to check into.

I have done some research and I have concluded the it is a Massey Harris 101 Junior, a Ward, a Rockol, or a Friday model 048. If it is a Friday model, don't let it get away.

The Custom Model "B" Tractor. made in Shelbyville IN. had a 6 cyl Chrysler flathead (inline) industrial engine and had a "Link Belt" reduction unit between the transmission output shaft and the differential. The "Link Belt" reduction unit is "chain" drive. The engine had the same bore and stroke, bearings, oil pump, valves and distributor as one of the 1948 Dodge Pick Up Engines and in addition had a belt driven govenor. The engines could easily be made to overpower the differential or the "link Belt" reduction unit; both were often the "failure mode" for the tractor. The engine govenor could be easily adjusted to "MUCH" higher RPM which gave more horse power. The Pick Up Engines were rated at something about 72 horsepower. I think that these engines ran quite well at 3600 RPM.

My neighbor had two Massey Harris 33's. As I recall, one had a Chrysler flathead and the other was the more common Continental. Did any 33's come from the factory with Chrysler flathead, or would this have been a conversion?

Many,MANY years ago I had a M-H 101 Junior that had a roller chain coupler between the clutch and transmission. This may be what your friend called
a chain drive. Ed

Oh yes. Custom, Massey Harris, Lehr, Wards, Simpson, Love, Rockhol. and probally a few more that I just cant come up with. I always liked these motors. These tractors came in different cubic inch motors also, and there was a variation of the Custom, that had a straight 8.

How about the Wards Tractor. I am thinking that it was a chrysler 6 also. I remember in the 60's a fellow by the name of Johnny Engle ran one in the 5500# class and was turning it 6,000 RPM's and holding it together at that RPM's

The tractors Joe mentions below were indeed equipped with Chrysler flathead sixes. Seems to me there were a couple other orphan/oddball makes that also used this engine but I cannot recall what they were offhand.

Regarding the "chain drive" comment, it's possible the tractor your friend is offering has a roller chain flex coupling between the clutch output shaft and the transmission input shaft. This coupling style is found on most Oliver tractors built in the 50's and 60's, and likely was used on other makes as well.

I don't know about the chain part of your question, but the Co-op No. 2 and 3, Massey-Harris 101 R, 101 S, 101 Senior, and 101 Super had Chrysler 6 cylinders and most likely were of flat head design.

The Super 101's ran Chrysler engines, however the Senior lines had Continental engines in them. The engines looked very similar in design since both were flatheads with all the same components on the same side of the engines.

I stand corrected, sir. The Seniors had Conties.

Yes, the tractors you mentioned were flatheads. Other tractors that used the Chrysler flathead six engines were, Friday, Custom, Norseman, and the Harris Power Horse, and no doubt more still.

I believe the Friday tractor from Harford, Mich., similar to the Love had this arrangement as well. had Chrysler drivetrain too. It was/is very fast.
