I am looking at buying a 986 International and I was wanting to know if they are normally a quality tractor or am I asking for trouble? Thanks for any advice you could give me on this tractor. Thanks.

The 400 series engines hold up well, other than that they are a glorified M.

A glorified M?????

I don't think so, That might be a 686.

Jeff, If you feel the price is right and the tractor is in good shape I would go for it. I don't remember the one I drove when working for a nieghbor being hard to shift. A common complaint is the lever being in a bad spot when in Park, Some people have problems tripping over it. I liked the cab on the 86 series, alot quieiter than the rattle-trap on our 806.

A majority of problems are caused by what was in the seat of the tractor, not the tractor.

Jeff, Don,t let someone else make your decision,Look the tractor over really close,And if you are satisfied,And you believe you are getting a good deal,I would buy it. It doesn't matter what color it is,As long as it gets the job done!! Good luck with the 986,Treat her good and she will be good to you.By the way,I am a service tech for a John Deere dealer,And all tractors have good & bad points that can't be prevented.

We bought one new and still use it as the main tractor on our 700 acres of cropland and dairy operation. We have 8000 hours on it and its still going strong. Never been overhauled still has the seal on the fuel pump. As far as that other post calling the 436 ci engine gutless, Id put it up against anything else in its size range. We pull a fully loaded 15' no-till John Deere Drill even though everybody said that was way to big for our tractor. We also pull 650-700 bushels worth of wagons with it and it doesnt even faze it. It is a great machine to work with and would definately buy another. Just make sure it has been taken care of reasonably well, and not turned up and it should work fine. Only downside is the TA but they are fairly easy to have fixed and parts are readily available.

My neighbor had one and he had real good luck with it had around 6000 hrs and only put in 1 TA and 1 waterpump. Great tractor!

We have had good luck with our 1086. Definitaly not a loader tractor. The shifting is poor even for field work!

All depends on what you plan to do with it and the care it has had and the care you intend to give it. Every color of tractor will have problems if you abuse it.

Around 'here' the whole '86 family was very popular, as was the prior '66 series of tractors.

Solid engines. TA trannies tend to wear out, but are fairly cheap to repair so not an issue, just something to look for. Their rear ends aren't the strongest in the world, but if it's in good shape now, it'll probably serve you a long time to come. They are difficult shifting, not a good loader tractor, but in general a good solid worker.

count the T/A, rear end, weak and complicated front axle, PTO, dry clutch, clutch shaft, shifting mechanism, weak and complicated 3-point, and gutless engine, then yeah it's a damn good machine.

Orange for older ones and Magnum red. Have a 7045 AC and an 8050 AC and they ARE awefully close to the reliability of my 7140 Magnum. Had an IH 966 and 1086 before. First traded the 1086 in 1983 for the 8050 and was impressed enough to get rid of the 966 for the 7045 in about 1990. Picked up the Magnum 2 years ago at an auction and so far so good. I can honestly say I'll never own another older IH. Signed, Lowell K.

Great tractor. The only thing to remember is that the engine is a wet sleve type engine and needs the DCA4 additive to prevent pin holes in the sleves. The engine is a in the 414,436,466 family used in a lot of IH's tractors and trucks. Navastar still builds it for use in their trucks.
