I have a question regarding tire sizes for the rear tires of my John Deere model 50. According to the book the original tires are 10x38.

Am I correct in thinking that the second number (38) is the rim size and that the first number (10) is something like the diameter of the cross section of the tire. The tires that are mounted on the tractor at the moment are 12.6x38. I assume therefore I can choose most any size greater than 10 as long at the second number (rim size) is 38? If the original tires are 10x38 how large can I go?

As always, thanks!
John

I have noticed some of the newer tires don't fit the lip of the rim on the older tractors. The tires are recessed in that area. The old rims are deeper in the lip area?? Earl In Illinois

Tire sizes went through a metamorphosis many years ago. (1960s).$18 word meaning they switched from rim width to cross-sectional width in reference to the first size that is listed. The second number does refer to the rim diameter. The first number refers to the Rim width if it is an even number on older tires, like 10inch, 11 inch, 12 inch, etc. 11 inch became 12.6?, 13 became 14.9, 14 became 15.5, 16 became 18.4, etc. referring to the maximum cross-sectional width of the tire. Also, you can safely change tire size by about one inch on the width of the rim, although they might bulge or pinch a bit- better to stay with the right size for the rim you have.

Check out the link, and go to FAQ's about tires, they have a chart explaning how tractor tires are measured, and old method for measuring, and new method.. The old 10x38 would now be 11.2x38

I just went through this with replacing the tires on my tractor. I was told that oyu can safely go 1 inch over your current rim width, which would be an 11X38, and the modern tire size equivelant to that is the 12.4X38 which is what you have on your tractor now. Hope this helps.

I have a '52 John Deere B it had 11.2-38's on it, I went to 13.6-38 tire on the same rim. Am I safe with this or should I go with a bigger rim? Thanks, Diesel Boy
