International 3514 -- hydrostatic drive

Considering purchasing a $4,000 International 3514 diesel with front-end loader and backhoe, 3,525 hours, hydrostatic drive. The engine starts fine, hydraulics on the loader/backhoe strong. There is problem with power when driving forward/reverse. According to the owner, the tractor drives but there is not enough power to knock over a tree stump or to drive into a load of dirt to be picked up with loader. The pressure gets up to 1,500 lbs but then drops off. It should be at 5,000 lbs. Is this an expensive repair? Would I need an expert to fix the repair? Forget the tractor and look elsewhere? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you - Rob

It's the same transmission then a 454,574 and H 84.The transmission have two range, low for work and high for travel. The neutral is for towing or testing.Check the Foot and inch valve ,for broken spring or bad sealing valve. You can plug reliefs valves and test,if ok,the trouble is external(drive control valve or foot and inch) if not it is internal.Did you check the charge and servo pressure? Check at 2300 r.p.m.The charge pressure may be 145 p.s.i and servo pressure 235 p.s.i. Then check with the range at neutral and engage forward, the charge do not drop below 80 psi,and servo 215 psi.if it does,it may leak on O rings, servo cylindres or sealings plates on the side of the center section or bad charge pump. It's a major repair. Since it is building up pressure chances are it is not the pump or drive motor. I have ran into several where the orings and backup rings on the pressure relief valves get hard and break so it will not build full pressure. There are two valves - one for forward and one for reverse - check and see if problem is both ways or just one way. The other thing that will cause same problem going both ways is the charge pump.

The worst case scenario Robert, would be an over haul of the drive pump and motor. I have never seen the inside of that tractor but have seen a lot of Hystat drives. If the drive pump and motor are external, not inside a case, they should have a CASE DRAIN line on them to return leakage to the hyd tank. Measuring this leakage will tell if the pump or motor is the cause of low drive pressure. However you may luck out and find it's only a relief valve. Good luck with it.

To me it sounds as if there is a problem in the charge pump circuit.
Note: I worked at an IH dealership during the mid 70s' and one of the things we were warned about was the tendency for guys to try to start a Hydro by pulling it or pushing it if it wouldn't start on the starter. Since the charge pump supplies lubrication to the pump and motor swash plates pulling/pushing will result in failure of the pump and/or motor piston feet which ride on the swash plates. A simple check for this condition is to pull the bottom cover off of the hydro housing and check for bronze filings.

That would really do a number on a hystat wouldn't it. I have a little one for snow plowing and it has a high/neutral/low that can only be shifted at stop and the neutral has a warning that you must use it for towing.
