The first antique tractor I bought was a Farmall M and I did not have a trailer yet. After talking with the owner and finally agreeing on a price I started driving the tractor the thirty some miles home. The only problem that I had was that the exhaust pipe came out of the manifold before I was a quarter of the home and had to finish the drive, I was slightly def when I got home.

Ok, this may be a dumb question, but how in the world did you drive a combine on the interstate?

I live in North Ga., and around here on I-75, a citation and probably a tow truck would be in your future...

I had a friend who attempted to drive only a couple of miles on the interstate with a 454 International and Brush Hog. He got fined and had to pay a rollback to take his tractor home.

Later, he drove the it to where he originally wanted to go down US 41 (not interstate) and was passed by 2 troopers who didn't give a second look.

Just curious!

My father-in-law drove a 1936 "B" John Deere, on full steel, 55 miles pulling a spreader with fuel barrels, grease, oil and tools and a 2 bottom plow.On the road, he took the lugs off and going up hills he had to wrap log chains around the wheels for traction. He slept in a barn nights. He took the radiator cap off and sat a can of pork & beans in the opening and after a round or two of plowing, he would have a hot meal. Plowed 78 acres in a week. Wife and kids stayed home and did the milking and other chores.

WHEN I WAS 12 I DROVE AN F30 FARMALL PULLING 3 HAY WAGONS ABOUT 14 MILES, ALL UP HILL IN 2ND GEAR. MY DAD GOT ME STARTED BECAUSE I HAD CAST ON MY LEGS AND COULD NOT PRESS THE CLUTCH, THEN HE JUMPED ON AND STOPPED IT WHEN I PULLED INTO THE DRIVWA. WHAT A SCARY TRIP BUT I WOULD NOT HAVE TRADED IT FOR ANYTHING

Bought a Ford 9n with ARPS half tracks and duals on the back too up in Red Lake, MN. Got permission from the snowmobile clubs to use some trails, as long as the groomer followed me. Don't know exactly how far it was but by highway its 75 miles to my cabin. Had to start at 4:00 am and got there at noon the next day. It was a night where the northern light were dancing. The only reason I did this is because it was too wide to fit on a trailer and didn't want to take the duals off.

One time back in the twenties I drove a Fordson from Duluth MN to Fargo ND and back in a blizzard. It was probably not a distance record but I think it was a record for the worse driving conditions. It was 35 degrees below zero, snowing hard, and 25 mph winds out of the north. To make matters worse it was uphill both ways.

No claim for distance, only 30 mi cross country with a 3300 combine (11 MPH flat out). But, I had my wife follow in the pickup. After I was 10 miles into the trip it dawned on me that I had made a serious distance and petrol miscalculation. Had to send my wife after more gas twice(!). I hadn't been in the area for 30 years, my wife had never been on these roads. Coulee region of WI. I owed her BIG-TIME(!) when I got home.

In 1936 my father drove a new Silver King 57
miles home in 1 hr and 40 min. One stop for gas
and a sandwich. This won't hold for distance, but how about the TIME?

Was the tractor modified or was he going down hill in neutral. 57 miles in under 2 hours means he had to travel just under 30 mph. Hardly possible in todays modern high speed tractors. Just curious!

My Dad told me his longest tractor ride was 6 miles to the local hospital when he lost 4 fingers of his right hand in a cornpicker. He drove his Ford in subzero January weather (Minnesota)and made it to the door of the emergency room before passing out. They might have attempted to resotre his fingers but in the early 80's there weren't as many surgeons available in rural hospitals. He always praised that tractor for it road speed.

When my uncle was mustered out in 1946 in El Paso, tractors were hard to get. He saw a new 2n Ford in El Paso and drove it about 600 miles to Dallas area.
About 12 years ago in Minn, someone stole a 1066 Farmall and drove it 80 miles before being caught. As a kid in the 50s, i often drove 30 miles to do custom work. I had a Ferguson with overdrive
and it was almost scarey.

a guy i know bought a new 135 mf back in the sevrntees and drove it home(about a 100 miles). about 15 miles from the dealership,he visited his brother in a small city next to the highway, and after a short visit drove all the way home. when he came home he discovered that he forgot his house keys at his brother's, so he climbed his new 135 and drove all the way back to his brother, spent the night and drove home the next morning.
(the guy didn't have a car nor car's driver's licence)

Maybe I have the the shortest trip. Dad Bought a new 730D in 1959. Drove it home 4.5 miles from dealer. Sold it on farm sale in 1965. Buyer drove it three miles to his place. That's where it stayed until I got it a few years ago. Had to drive it about eight miles, but I smiled all the way home. Have restored it and am still smiling today. Lost my Dad in 1988, so am proud to have his tractor. My son already has laid claim to it and says he wants it for his sons. What a legacy to pass on to the future!!

In 1951 drove a reg farmall 70 some miles to our new farm it was feb in Iowa Don,t remember what we pulled behind but must have been something that had to go slow and too big to haul. I also ran out of gas about 12 miles from home and farmer gave me some as dad had went ahead to do chores. Would I do it again I think not or ask kid too. I was 15 at the time bob

Back in '98 Grandpa sold out the farm. We live in Northeastern IN, and a gentleman from NE OH bought our Case IH 1640 combine. He said that he was goin to drive all the way across OH.....grandpa told him that the combine wasnt leaving the farm unless it was on a semi.....two days later he showed up with a semi right behind him....im guessing it would have been over 200 miles...LM

I don't know how far it is but in 1918, my uncle (Carmichael Windrow) drove his Essex Tri-Directional) from Dildo, Newfoundland to Carlsbad, California. That might be considered a pretty long trip even though the ETD's road gear bave a top speed of 87 mph.

Rufus, it is a little known fact that two ETDs were used by the British Navy during WWI. They made the round trip between Halifax and Dover 21 times without problems and were credited with sinking one German submarine. Of course, they were equiped with the optional "Ocean Kit." It is interesting to note that the ETDs crossed the Atlantic by driving on the sea bottom all the way.

Would you believe that Uncle Carmichael piloted one of those, as a matter of fact I believe it is the one he drove from Dildo. Believe it or not, that was supposed to be a pretty dull place. I think I might go visit there, my uncle apparently has quite a clan spread throughout that part of the world.

That was not that unusual for those days. Most ETD's were used as personal transportation. What makes it unique was that he arrived two days BEFORE he left!

Ah, it's nice to see there are indeed some true tractor historians in our midst. I forgot to mention that point about the arrival time. Also forgot to mention that he helped out 27 stalled John Deeres along the way and pulled them to the next dealership. That made the trip even more challenging.

About 5 years ago we brought an 806 d 170 miles back from a farm sale. The next day we were asked," how you gonna get that back without a trailer." we surprised everyone with the answer. "It's already back. " It only took about 9 hours. In the late 50s my Uncle and Dad drove their super H farmall 285 miles to the new farm.

Back in 80's drove 85 miles from old home to new home on Oliver 90. Luckily it has the high speed gearbox, but it was not really that which was the problem. Engine had only recently been put back together after standing 20+ years in pieces (rods out).
Main problem here in England was it was a 'bank holiday weekend' and roads were full of car drivers.
Many of these haven't a clue as how to overtake a tractor doing 10 miles per hour!
44 tonne lorries seem to have no probs overtaking but a lot of so-called car drivers with many more horse power per tonne than the lorries, and much shorter vehicles, are unable to pass and cause a tailback, meaning regular pullovers to let the queue go by.
It's not only the distance but also the time/speed, weather, cab?, other traffic, condition of vehicle, etc. to take into account.
Have since run it, up to near 50 miles, to shows quite often (with a padded seat fitted) but now I think at 55 years of age she deserves a lorry ride for anything over about ten miles.
The guys driving 140 miles deserve a medal (or a year of free 'pile' medication!). Thats a lot further than I would want to drive an old tractor with no cab on a cool and wet English day.

First combine I bought was a Model K Gleaner- drove it home 140 miles in one day (1976). Had the bean head on it- the two row corn head was in the pickup. Cousin and I drove both home, pickup fuel pump went out 90 miles from home, stopped at a farmer's yard at Fairfax, Mn., he gave me his pickup to catch up with my cousin who had to get home for milking, I got the combine home at 10:30 pm. Lloyd Hinderman was the farmer's name- never met him before- try that in the big city!

Back in the mid 80's bought a 630 John Deere up in Nebraska and at around 4:30 that afternoon headed for home. Drove in the yard a 3:00 AM. The car speedometer showed 135 miles. Used a tank of gas, plus most of a 5 gallon can we stopped and poured in. I was ready to get off when home.

There was some farmers in our area that had farms 200 miles apart. They would disconnect the driveline on their Big Bud tractors to save wear when they drove them back and forth to do the summerfallowing and seeding.

Big Bud tractors are high horsepower 4-wheel drive articulated tractors that were made in Havre Montana were I am currently going to college. The driveline was disconnected so that the front wheels drove the tractor. Make sense now. Sorry for not being specific on my earlier post. Big Bud tractors are pretty common around here.

Almost had to drive a Hagie post sprayer 110 mi. few yrs. back for a customer till we found a trailer to rent for the wide thing about an hr. B4 we left. P.S. road speed on Hagie:12MPH.

I find this very interesting, but I have questions..... Doesn't the road eat up the soft rubber on the agr.tires? what speed do you try to run? doesen't the last tractot have to run faster than the first one?
I live in Southeastern Ohio near Loveland....does any one live close to me,that loves tractors? I have four..... e-mail me about any thing going on this year....

I would say the road isn't too hard on tractor tire. As a kid we drove tractors quite a distance to different fields the farm we worked on rented or bought the standing hay off of. Many days we would run 5 to 10 miles to and from such a job, not a great distance, but when you add it up, and the tires never seemed to wear. They lasted for years, I would say at least 10 years at that.

My father-in-law tells of his nephew driving his borrowed tractor about 30 miles to return it, says he put an appreciable ampount of wear on the tires. (They'd trailered it there, why they didn't trailer it home, I don't know.) Dad's been down on road milage ever since!

We drove our MF 275 to and from the dealer for repairs when there was no trailer available and we needed it NOW. It was about 60 miles each direction.

I didn't think they made a trailer that would haul an R-62. Those puppies are BIG!

Back in '80 I drove a JD105 w/6 row cornhead from Ft. Wayne, Ind. to my farm in east central Illinois. It took about 20 hours. Before I started, I reversed the drive tires - tire wear was negligible.
