Gasoline water absorption

I was working on my mower yesterday, weather was hot and very humid, ran a sample of gas from tank and fuel line into a clear container and looked for water and sediment(for the second time after cleaning and drying out plastic tank) looked clean. I sat it aside while I checked further and in about 15 minutes I noticed the gas in the container had changed colors. It went from the ugly yellowish orange color of gasoline to a very cloudy, milky look. Decided it must be absorbing moisture,so I put in a few drops of STP water treatment and sure enough it cleared it right up! The question is: was the absorption due to methanol or ethanol content in the gasoline given the fact that they will absorb water by themselves? Can any one shed some technical light on the subject? Is this prevented in automobile/trucks because of the fact it is pretty much a closed loop system when in the fuel tank or is it just captured in the filters? Gene
