Looking for advice on what to use to cut tall grass. I have a field about three acres, it has poor drainage and by the time it has dried out after a wet spring the grass is three to four feet tall . What should I be using to cut it down? I do not need a lawn look. Just need to cut it down to about eight inches. Thanks in advance, Ed

Something like a brush hog (of which Bush Hog is a popular maker; there are many others) would do well for you if you already have a tractor (with live pto is great, without you need the ORC mentioned here in many older threads). It cuts through anything, including wet grass, small tree sprouts & shrubby stuff, gopher mounds, last year's dirt ruts, etc.

If you wanted hay to bale, or a lawn-type finish it's not great for that, but it will be the best implement for you. It is sort of a string trimmer, but the string is replaced with metal swinging arms and some really heavy steel & gearbox to take some abuse & whack stuff down.

If you don't have a tractor, those DR things mentioned are pretty good, if you can handle walking behind it a couple times a year for 3 acres..... Would be cheaper than a tractor & brush hog, but not by much!

Sounds like you are in the market to buy a "Bush Hog" type mower....!!! Get the largest one you can reasonably use behind your tractor... Either pull-type, or 3-point... In very Tall grass and weeds, you will be over-lapping, as the right tractor wheel tramps the stuff down, and the mower will not pick it up... So, the mower will have to catch that on the next round... SO, a 6' Bush Hog will only be cutting 4 1/2' to 5' per round... In shorter grass and weeds, you will be able to take a full cut... I can run my 6' Bush Hog with my 1962 JD-"B" with no problems....varying from 2nd to 4th gear... Hope this helps you...!! Ron.

Sounds like a good place for a DR. I have a DR trimmer mower I use on places like that. A DR Field and Brush mower would certainly do a better job. They are expensive. Maybe you could rent one.
