I have a couple of acres to mow. 1 is flat and fairly smooth (lawn). 1 is slightly bumpy, small limbs, stumps, sticks, etc. I'm looking at a 27 hp tractor with a 72" rotary mower. Will 27hp be enough?

I put my 72" Woods on a 30hp Kubota and in taller grass it wasn't enough tractor. In shorter grass it worked it fairly hard, but did do the job.

I hogged out about 5 acres of tall rye with it, and it "never" got hot, but the guage showed 3/4 of the way to hot. From that day on, every time i cold started it, it blew out a big puff of blue smoke. I guess the valve guides couldn't take it!!

A real "utility" tractor would have been a lot better even with the same hp. There's a HUGE difference between a Utility tractor and a compact tractor!!

Jeff, a 27hp should do fine, especially if you plan to keep on top of the mowing and not let it get knee high. The old 8N is only 24hp and it did major farm work for years. 35 to 45 hp will just get the work done faster and with less work on the engine. If the tractor has a belly mower, it may be difficult to get to the blades to sharpen them. Have fun.

Bill, Thanks! FYI: The tractor does not have a belly mower. With 27 hp do I need to be cautious of using it mid day in 90 - 100 heat?
