We are considering buying a tractor that's up in Manitoba, the problem, of course, being the miles between there and Idaho. Have any of you worked with/can you recommend a Canadian hauler--close to Winnipeg would be best. In a perfect world, we'd love to have it dropped on our doorstep, but that aside, we could intercept it and haul it home from either Montana (relatives there) or S. Dakota (around pheasant hunting time!). Would appreciate your info.

I did e-mail one flatbed hauler in Winnipeg last week, but haven't heard anything back.

I have brought in a few tractors from Canada. I have been fortunate to have most of them delivered to the end of the driveway. Your best bet is to contact a trucking company and have them look out for a partial load. Your cost will be less this way. So far I haven't had any problems getting them accross the border. Worst case scenerio you might have to hire a broker to complete the paperwork. Good Luck!

I'm less than 150 miles from Winnipeg, in North Dakota. If having a place to dump it off for a while would help you, email me.

I'm in the Winnipeg area. I have used Big Freight out of Steinbach, MB quite a bit and they give very good service. If you would like to email me I can give you a list of several haulers you might try. I think the biggest problem you will have is that Winnipeg to/from Idaho is not likely a very heavy freight lane whereas Winnipeg/Minnesota,Iowa,Illinois, Indiana, Ohio etc. is. This will also be LTL flatdeck. I don't think the truckers are too shy of the border. I wonder how many people know that Canada and the US are each others biggest trading partner. The trade that goes back and forth accross our borders each year in US terms is far more than the US does with any other country in the world. Meaning China, Japan, Taiwan or any other. In fact I think I read that it's more than any other two combined; and I'll bet a high proportion of that is by truck. I've done quite a bit of shipping tractors by truck and I have also hauled them both ways. You can get a dink on either side of the border but I can't say I ever had any trouble. Just some guys/gals like to let you know they got the hammer. Maybe you should go duck or goose hunting up here this fall and take home your other bird as well. Good advice to stay to calling it a farm tractor. There's no duty either way as long as it was manufactured in the US or Canada. donsandy@escape.ca

Independent haulers seem a bit shy facing the jackets of the border patrol. Anything not perfect
on the paperwork, means delay, or turn back. Call
the border cross site you would use, write down what they require. If you did the haul yourself,
it falls more into Personal traveling. No duty on
items $2000.00 or less. Origin of manufacture,
address of delivery. FARM tractor, avoid the word
Antique. Truckers get questioned, you could get
through(probably) much easier. The flare-up of mad-cow, may mean proof of two years, on the N.A.
Farm. Haul it yourself, if your border phone call
looks like a green light. Good luck.
