My son in law has a chance to buy a 1970 Long 460 Tractor for $500. He said it's a diesel, runs good, has good rubber all the around, and the sheet metal is in fair shape. The only thing that he found that does not work is the 3pt hitch. What we would like to know is, would this tractor as I have described it be worth putting time and money into and what would be the first thing to check concerning the hyd system? I posted this on the other forum but have not gotten a response yet. Thanks for any input and advice on this

My dad bought one new in 1981. Long 510, never fails to start, uses 1/2 the fuel of our big name tractors, and it has been a very reliable farm tractor for us. You might check the hydraulic filter or screen that is tied in with the lift system. There is a screen that can get clogged up, it is basically the 3 pt lift filter. My dad has changed that or cleaned it out and it makes a real difference with his when it gets slow. Tough tractor from a tough country, ROMANIA. I would not hesitate to buy one.

Yes, I would surely buy it. Be sure to check the fluid level and the preasure valve usually located under the seat. You never know, it could be something just that simple.

Don't know ;bout the lift but Long is 1 of the toughest tractors ever made. Knew a man with 1 and it never saw a shed and never failed to start or work all day.

OK if it aint in NC how 'bout Georgia? I'll take it and all you can find like it, Long made/makes a good tractor, resale value is not good but if you are buying it to work who cares. A 45 HP diesel tractor with power steering and good rubber for $500, yeah buddy all day long(Long) pun intended, eeeehhh I gotta get off here.

Grab it as fast as you can! Anywhere close to NC? If you don't want it, I do. Fellow called GEO posts on these forums and is really sharp on these tractors. Under the seat is a big nut which has a spring and piston under the nut- some sort of relief valve for the hydraulic system. Take out the spring and piston, clean everything carefully and the system likely will work again.

I myself would buy it but if you have to ask about it I would say call a few tractor repair shops and find out what the most it would cost if everything was shot and needed replaced on the hydraulic system.

I worked for a Ford/Long dealer in the mid 70's and visited Long's plant in Tarboro in '75.All the diesels were built in Romania under license from Fiat. The big Long's (60 hp+) were Polish made, again under license from Fiat with it's Russian partner Belarus. Tarboro plant did painting of sheetmetal and light assembly. Fiat diesel is ok but leaky.

Thanks for the input. I don't see how we can go wrong with this tractor for the money. If nothing else, it can be a start for my son and law as far as working with tractors are concern. I'll keep you posted on what we find out about it.
Once again thanks and my God bless.
