I have a question for you experts out there. How much hay will I need per calf to make it through the winter. I will need to feed then from beginning of Oct. to end of April next year. I am buying them as 6 week old calves the beginning of Sept. Any help will be much appreciated. Thank You

Bill,

Like the other guys said, they really won't eat much hay until their older. They just nibble at hay for the first 3 months. Get real good quality hay for them and feed some good calf grower grain mix. They won't really eat any signficant amount of hay until they are just about ready for pasture in the spring.

Ummm? The calves themselves will not eat much hay this winter, a nibble here or there at first then gradually they'll eat more. They'll start on creep feed real good though.

What about the cows they come from? Now they will eat lots of hay, however you don't mention them.

Basically, is it two six week old calves by themselves without their mamas? That changes everything somewhat, creep feed, supliments, and then they'll actually tend to start grazing somewhat early.

No expert here, but raised a few new born Holsteins in the very beginning to keep the exemption on my place until I bought some cattle.

THIRTY BALES OF GOOD QUALITY HAY SECOND CUTTING. PER CALF.FOR THE 7 MONTHS.I WOULD BUY ONE TON OF HAY PER CALF. YOU WILL NEED FEED AND THAT IS ABOUT 4 POUNDS OF FEED PER CALF PER DAY. FOR THE FRIST 2 MONTHS AND THEN 6 POUNDS OF FEED A DAY. 120 LBS A MONTH FOR THE FIRST TO MONTHS 180 LBS A MONTH FOR THE REST OF THE 5 MONTHS. TOTAL FEED PER CALF 1140 LB

Feed a balanced ration of grain to the tune of 2-3 lbs per 100 lbs of bodyweight. Ok a 6 week old calf @150-175lbs needs between 4.5 bs+ of feed. Then offer hay free choice, they wont eat very much, say 2-3 lbs. So a 50lb bale of high quality hay should do 1 calf for 12-15+ days, of course as these calvs grow, so does the feed and hay intake.

As the others say, a 6 week old isn't ready for much hay. In another 2 months or so you'll use some.

You might want to check with your local extension agent for some advice on care and feeding of your calves. Most are very helpful, know local conditions and it's free.

None. At six weeks, they would be much too young for hay. They won't be ready for hay/pasture until they weigh around 300-350 lbs.
