For the past few years, we've farmed my father-in-laws farm. He passed away 12 years ago. My wife and her brother inheirited 788 acres. Niether my wife and I, or my brother-in-law and his family live on the farm. We both have small places of our own. Or at least untill yesterday. You wouldn't know it by the Kydirtfarmer "handle", but this ol' boy is a native Hoosier. And guess what? We're going home! At 10:30PM last night, we signed the papers that make 194 acres of fine Indiana soil, MINE!!!!! We will spend the next few months getting it cleaned up, and a couple hayfields planted. A house will go up in the spring. I,m starting the first barn on monday. It is about 55 miles between MY farm, and the "family farm". We are going to plant corn and soybeans fence row to fence row there next year. All the hay operation will be at my place. We won't need to move much equipment from place to place. This is the best thing to happen to me since I met my wife. Ain't life great! From now on, I'll be Indydirtfarmer.

I hope to leave KY and head back home to Oklahoma to farm someday. I miss my century family farm very much! Good luck and best wishes.

Thanks to all! We are blessed. My wife and I both have good "day jobs". I do about 800 hrs of custom work a year. We scrape to get by sometimes. We would be better off finacially, if we just saved our money. Instead, we farm land that has belonged to her family, and my family, for 90 years. We spend ALL of our time outdoors. And, we're doing what we love. I know we're not going to get rich at this. But, we made it through some tough times, and we're still hanging in there. And I live as far from Indianapolis as you can get, and still be in the state.

Is that as far north (like me, only 15 miles from Michigan) or south? Must be south if the soil rich, really sandy here!

xxx-dirtfarmer,

As someone who lives too close to Indy, I'd like to suggest you consider Hoosierdirtfarmer instead. Then you could tell guys inspiring things like: I live close to Milan, home of the true story behind the movie Hoosiers. Or: I live close to Vincennes, where George Rogers Clark defeated the British. Or: I live close to where Abe Lincoln spent his teenage years.

If you talk about Indy, the only image I conjure up is corrupt politicians, overpaid and underperforming sports teams, and the one famous woman who murdered someone but the cops were afraid to arrest her.

So I think it's better to stick with Hoosier.

Congrats. I just bought a 280 acre place in eastern Iowa this spring. Mine was a century farm with an 80 year old brick farmhouse and 6 original outbuildings, including a big basement barn. I've already hauled away a truckload of old tires, scrap metal, a dozen or so tractor batteries, and scrap wood and trash. The place is starting to look pretty good.

Congrats again on your farm. Very exciting!

Congratulations ! I am proud for you. In a day and time when everything around me is being sold off in housing tracks it is good to read about somebody fortunate enough to still be able to acquire land in "farmable quantities." My dad and his brothers are in the process of settling up my grandmother's estate, 740 acres of prime Central KY ridge farm. Sure hope I can come out like you did. Congratulations again, and ENJOY! !

I can't explain to you how jealous I am of your situation! We bought a 3.5 acre place last fall but all that did was make me yearn for a real farm. Many happy days are your's to follow!

From a lifetime farmer. I hope you do some premarketing on both of those crops. I hate to burst your bubble but the way prices are you will be oweing the bank for crop inputs instead of profit from corn and beans. Hay will make you more. Been their done that. Good luck
