My son just completed his senior year, and did just what you have in mind. He got a tractor from his grandfather, which solved the purchase price - free, but when we got through the job still cost us over $500, and that was with no major overhaul parts. Basic tractor was sound. Had to repair mostly small items, exhaust, seals & rubber parts, ignition, electrical, paint, upholstery, battery, lights, some sheet metal. He did a pretty thorough disassembly, cleaning, sandblasting, priming and painting. Teacher asked if he got the required minimum 15 hours - heck, he had over 500! That wasn't counting the other requirements, the research, writing the paper, visiting other tractor collectors, getting help from community mentors, and presenting the paper and project to the judges! My point is, that if you choose to take on a project of this magnitude, be ready to sacrifice a major amount of time, work, and money. I wish you luck, and am behind you all the way, the product you get will bring you pleasure, and pride. And lots of education you didn't bargain for! You will have worked far harder than most of your classmates. (I posted a short writeup and picture of son's project - check the archives in the Deere forum - JD B restored by 18 yr old.)
