I read an article that said non detergent oil should be used in old tractors. I am thinking of buying an 8N from a guy who is rebuilding it. He says HD oil is the best. Who is right?

"N" series Fords like straight 30 wt. detergent oil after a rebuild.

Much easier to keep the pump primed, and your oil pressure seems to run 5lbs higher after warm-up compared to multi-viscosity oil.

Check the archives over at the "N" board for lots more info.

I think there's confusion about what non-detergent, heavy duty and multi vicosity oils. You can sometimes get a straight 30 weight which I wouldn't use in anything but a dirty old engine. Now there's an SAE 30 and sometimes with an added heavy duty or high detergent. This is the oil that I'd use which will keep a rebuilt engine cleaner. This oil is also mostly recommended for air cooled small tractor engines.
The multi viscosity oils are more for modern close tolerance engines since there's more additives and less oil.

i have rebuild alot of engines and all the ones that people had ran non detergent oil in were right full of sludge i mean bad if the motor is getting over hauled i would run 15w40 in it if it is not been taken apart and cleaned i would switch to detergent but change quite often to get all the crap out the only good thing about non detergent oil is if you have a old engine that leaks and uses oil seems like non detergent will plug it up but think about it if it plugs leaks whats that do the oil channels???
