Just wondering what everybody is paying for firewood these days. I have about 4 facecords in my garage, I am ready for Mr. frost. The wood I have is mostly from my property. Some from the neighbors. But next year I may have to start buying it.

Here in the Sierras in California, a cord of green hardwood (mostly oak) goes for about $185 - 250, depending on the time of year. Considerably more closer to cities. Pine is a lot less, but you get a lot less heat too.

Never mind face cords. I would not buy or sell wood by the face cord. Do the math and figure out what it's costing you by the cord.
BTW, I burn about 15 to 20 cords of wood/year to heat two homes. I get most of it for nothing. Tree company delivers the unwanted stuff from jobs that they do whenever I ask them for a load.

well, let's see - have 4 chain saws - 1 hyd splitter - tractor - trailer - minor repair to saws each year - have plenty of trees - burn about 10 gallons of gas to cut/split/haul each year - gallon of chain oil - can't count the time - so i guess it cost me about $20 a year for 6-7 cords. wade

Ouch. Well here in the southern teir of NY we have lots of Amish sawmills and they mostly all have cutoff saws and cut up the slabs and they go in a big pile or on a truck. the truckers get between $60 and $100 a load for about 5 to 9 face cords. Sometimes this time of year the one guys pile is so big he needs it moved to keep sawing and he pays us to come in and move it with our loader and trucks don't care what we do with it so I bring it home. Great deal to get payed to heet my home. If I go get it it is $1 per foot a pickup load (6 foot box $6) Last year I heated my house for 5 month's for $150. Have a nice day!!

I told a guy the other day, that my wood is cheap. It's the cutting and hauling that I charge for. My son cuts wood, and sells it for as much as $175 a pick-up load. He sells all that he can cut. We live on the outskirts of Louisville, Kentucky. The city folk will pay just about whatever anyone ask's for decent firewood. The price is relative to the outside temperature. We have a section of woods that got nailed by a small tornado last spring. There is plenty of wood to be cut up. We have to clean it up, so we will be cutting it, no matter if we sell it or not. I heat my shop with wood, and we have two fireplace's in our house. I end up burning somewhere around 7 or 8 ricks a winter. I can't mail the gas company firewood, but I can sure cut down on the size of the check that I send them.

I'm not paying anything, as I've 31 acres of mixed forest. In this area, $35 a rick is standard. A few years back a rick was what you are calling a facecord, 1/3 of a cord. Nowdays it looks a bit more like 1/4 of a cord. Maybe that has something to do with the folks selling it. The 1/3 cord folk are getting to be seniors.

In the central U.P. of Michigan, $40-$50 per facecord. Mostly hardwood in 16" lengths. But you can buy more quantity for a cheaper price. If you can cut and split the wood yourself, they'll deliver 10 cords in 8 foot lengths for a fairly cheap price.

I live in central Mi. near Flint. The price around me is about $50 per face cord. I have seen some guys selling it for $65 per face cord. That is a bit high.

Not sure if any wood has ever been sold that way around here. All our sales are by the rounded pickup load. Boy that works for me is cutting up tree tops from a logging job last year (I get 1 load out of every 5, paid in money, not wood, $50.00 per load regardless of what he gets for it). Price goes up as you get closer to the major urban areas. He gets $65 per load ricked in Versailles, about 100 miles east in Lexington (our closest major metro area) he gets $80-90. That's for an 8' bed, wood is ash, oak, or cherry; maybe a little locust and hickory.

Face, rick, there are many different ways to price out firewood. The only true recognized measure of firewood is the cord. A cord of wood cut and split measures 128 cubic feet. 16 inch long pieces stacked evenly 4 feet high and 3 rows deep. A face or rick is referred to as the first or "face" row of a cord. This would be 1/3 of a cord of firewood. I sold firewood off our farm for years, could pile 1/2 a cord on the pickup. I sold all I could for $75 a load, delivered within a 10 mile radius of the farm. This included the cities of Brunswick and Medina, here in Ohio. I always let the wood cure (dry out) for a year so it would burn nicely for my customers. Hope this helps, Don

I am from the St Louis, MO area and they are getting $125 a cord this time of year, more in December. I hooked up with a small tree service company and get all I can use during the summer from him just for hauling it. When he gets a job taking out a hardwood tree he gives me a call and I round up a couple brothers with pickups and trailers and haul all day. They have a program with the St Louis County Parks where they designate a spot where they haul all trees when they have storm damage and offer it to the public for free. I have picked up a load or 2 from them a couple times.

I live in southern Indiana, in a rural farming community and around here we get about $45 to $50 a level full size pickup load. If it is a good tight load it will be almost exactly a 1/3 of a cord, or what we call a face cord. That is for oak, ash and cherry. In my younger day, we could fill a grain truck and take it to Louisville and get $175 a cord. We could get about 4 cords on the truck. this was in the early 80's. That was good money for a couple of high schoolers for a couple of days work. I have never bought wood in my life as there is always someone around here that has some to cut for free. In the last couple of years I have noticed that in the "big citys" near us they even sell it at convenience stores in very small ricks (about a wheel barrow load) for as much as $20. It amazes me the number of people that stand in line to buy it at that price. Sometimes I wonder if I am in the wrong business.

S.E. Mass I'm paying $145 for a whole cord, cut and split. Or you can buy 8 cords for $500, but thats in log length, you need to cut it into usable length, and split it yourself. There are people around here trying to sell a cord for $195. They get it too! (but not from me...)
