I posted what I considered to be a descriptive ad for 2 Oliver 70 parts tractors. The asking price was $450 for both and I explained that they hadn't run in over 20 years, but they were complete. The responses that I got were phenominal. 1. Do they run?
2. Are they wide front ends? Wouldn't a wide front end be worth about $450 alone?
3. Are the tires new? I felt like saying no , but I will put new ones on for you.
4. Will you send pictures? A camera costs $450.
5. Do all serial numbers match?
6. Are the batteries okay on them?
7. Do you want to trade them for a lawn mower?
8. Will you take less?
9. Will you check on shipment to Africa?
10. Etc. Is it just me or do a lot of people out their seriously think they are going to get 2 Oliver 70's for $225 each and drive them home? Maybe I am nuts. Oh well, that's what my wife says anyway....so maybe I am.

A few years back a fellow came by with a manifold for an H Farmall and ther was a piece half as big as my hand missing. H e asked me how much I would charge to weld it up. I told him that manifolds could be found cheap and this one was unrepairable and I or nobody else could repair it. His next question was ,:How much would you charge to weld it if you could?" I replied that i ran an honest shop with reasonable rates and i made all efforts to tell a customer if repairs were feasible, but i never had been able to price an impossible task at any price.

An ad in our local paper a few years back:

John Deere B, Runs, no starter. $800.

Sounded like a styled B with a missing starter. Nope - Turns out it was a Centerfill 4bolt B. I only hope it was not on factory rounds..... ...

I called and was too late. You snooze, you lose.
I now call on anything that even remotely looks interesting. :(

Hi John,

Hey, didn't you advertise those Olivers before? I remember calling a Butler number about a couple of 70s -- this spring maybe? Anyway, if that's you and they're still there, I'd like to take a look at them. I just up near Emlenton. Won't be back on line until Monday though....

I have about twenty or more of my tractor collection sitting in my side yard. Last Sunday evening I was working in my shed which is about 150 yards from the road. A truck and trailer outfit pulled off the road into the road ditch out front. Three guys got out and as soon as they hit the ground they were yelling something to or at me. I just stood and watched as they walked toward my tractors. When they did get within ear shod one ask if the tractors were for sale.

I said NO

The fellow asks then what I would take for the Farmall C

I said if I wanted to sell it I would have to have 1500 for it

The guy said WOW thats a little steep for the condition its in.

Then He walks over to the tractor and starts to pick out faults. and wants to hear it run.

I ask him if he remembered that it wasn't for sale.

I dont usually post but i had to on this one. I run a small repair business and buy and sell used equipment on the side. Just today i had a guy stop about a log spliter i had out back. It will run but the moter is weak and has sat up for awhile, so he ask about it and I tell him 200.00 and it needs a moter. He tells me crank it up get it running and he would go 150.00 if I painted it. not all people are like this but some sure will test your faith. Now 200.00 was the hook to it and get it out of my way price thanks for letting me vent now i can go back to work

David, I'm guity of doing what you are complaining about. I have made offers like that and made a deal. You never know how far someone will go till you ask them. I almost always make a lowball offer first and sometimes they take you up on it. I look at buying and selling as a game. The seller is trying to get the most for his product and the buyer is trying to pay as little as he can. Sometimes both win. Sometimes only one person wins. Sometimes nobody wins. I've been on all sides.

I've found that if your offer is too lowball, you'll probably offend the guy and he then won't sell to you, period.

To be fair, a digital camera can be had for $200 & is a good investment if you wish to do much internet sales. Or you can take a regular photo, 1-hour develop, & scan with a $75 scanner. A photo is worth a 1000 words, that one is not unreasonable to ask. And, would clear up a lot of the questions for those who are not good at reading comprehension. ;)

But it is funny the replies a person can get. I guess all of them are really valid (other than the Africa scam), taken one at a time. When you get a whole wave of them, it's a litle overwhelming. ;) Sounds like a pretty reasonable price, I was thinking $450 each until I read the whole message....

Where are you located???? Just kidding. ;)

I picked up a neat little cheapo digital camera for fifty bucks a couple years ago. It is limited to 640x480 resolution, but I mainly use it to document equipment teardowns, and that is plenty good enough. It would also work great for posting pics for photo ads. The same type camera is available nowadays for around twenty bucks.

I 'll take em off your hands if you pay me to haul them off.

I might do the $450 if you throw in the old crappy baler that you have in the shed. You know, the one you used last week to bale a couple thousand bales.

"People do strange things I had four tires mounted on rims they were not real good but they were legal and mounted. I needed them out of my way so I put them out by the road with a sign on them saying "Free Chevy S10 wheels and tires." One guy knocked on my door and told me that he would take them if I demounted the tires as all he wanted were the rims.Couple of days after I threw him off the property another guy wanted to know what other vehicles they fit. After about three weeks I put them back in my shed. Fella at work told me to put them back out with a $50.00 price tag onthem and that they would be stolen overnite if folks thought that they had value.

Pitch: Your friend was on to something--a buddy of mine gets rid of old chairs, matresses, etc. by putting them out by the road with a "for sale" sign on them, and a price tag that's about 5 times what they're worth. Sure enough, someone usually steals them in the middle of the night and thinks they got a "bargain"!
