Draft - Tractor Size Question

I am courious as to how large in hp generally tractors go before draft is not effective and therefore not used due to the size of the plow or ground engaging implement.

With some of the larger JD's, Farmalls and Olivers that were set-up for pulling vs using a 3 point hitch - was that because 3 pt draft was not available at the time or were the size of the tractor and plow simply to large for a draft sensing mechanism?

Thanks in advance,
Bill

Over 4 bottoms, and the plow gets too long & heavy for true 3-point hookup. Most plows are 2-point, hooking up to the lower arms, and _can_ use draft sensing, but a lot of us farmers don't bother, as these big plows stay in the ground, & diesel has a nice tork curve to handle the hard spots.

Also, if you get over 5 bottoms, you need the tractor centered over to the left so far you almost have to run on-land, not in the furrow.

Draft for 3 point was on most tractors since the 8N ford. The reason most farmers don't use 3 pt for large equipment is because of how dangerous it is to have 3 ot implements. If, or I should, say when you break a lower arm pin you end up with the implement in the seat with you as it climbs the tire on the side that did not break.

I can't speak to the other colors, but Oliver had draft sensing on their 3pt hitches from the 1800A's on up. They used a lower link sensing system, that's why you don't see the spring conglomeration on the tractor end of the top link like on Fords and others. This also allows draft sensing with semi-mounted equipment not just full 3pt.

only the smaller fords used the draft control on the top link, my ford 8000 has the lower link sensing draft control on it

There was a time when drawn tillage equipment was attached only to the drawbar. Ford and Harry Ferguson had the market cornerned until they split. John Deere, Allis Chalmers, Farmall and Oliver all had early load sensing hitches in the 60's and some in the early 50's.The new Monster tractors of today have load sensing hitches that are controlled with on board computers that are very sophisticated.
