I have been noticing fewer numbers of older gas and diesel tractors that are available for restoration projects. Most of the unrestored and available old iron that I find are LP powered machines (but not many go to tractor shows). What is the restorablilty of an older LP machine?

The worst problem I have ever had working on the LP tractors is spark plugs being stuck or broke off in the head. The LP tractors that ran a different mixture of butane burned drier and caused the spark plugs to seize up if someone didn't put no-seize or lubricant on the threads. Not always a problem but can be. Some of the LPs were made in lower numbers and more collectible too. You won't really have any more cost than restoring the others.

I am like some of the others that have already weighed in.

I think the LP's make a really neat looking tractor. If you check the nebraska tests you will find that the LP version of a tractor will usually be the highest HP version for that model(slightly).

Parts for the carburation system are tough to get but usually the only thing that goes bad is a diaphragm. Everything else is gaskets and these can be made.

The one thing about taking one of these to shows is to make sure your tank is full as adding with a can is not real easy. You can do this with one of the old style grill tanks and a hose with the right fittings. You need one of the old tanks without the OPD style valve so you can get liquid fuel out. You will need to be able to fill the cylinders your self because the gas companys wont fill a small tank with the old style valve.

I used to carry all this equipment with me to shows until the meth thing became a problem in my area (NW IA). The equipment to put the LP from the 20lb cylinder to the tractor could also be used to put Anhydrous Ammonia from a nurse tank to the 20 lb cylinder. For this reason I just make sure the tractor has enough fuel and don't carry this equipment.

I have had many LP tractors and still have 2. LP is the only gas burner I will have. You will NEVER find a gasoline tractor on my place unless it is a gift. The only people bashing LP are the ones that cannot adapt to filling the fuel tank. The engines seem to last 2 or 3 x longer than gasoline....nothing washes your lube oil down the cylinder walls like in a gasoline engine. Once you understand the properties of LP gas and have the tools to fuel it, it is easy as pulling your boots on. The blessing in that is, you can buy LP tractors cheaper ((usually)). Best of luck, hope to see your pic of a LP burner soon.

JW, Very,Very Very Good. LP is NO DIFFERENT from a gas, except for the fuel system. The LP tank makes these ol grils look real tough.
