OT: Why asymmetric fans?

Hi, folks. My Farmall Super A has a normal, symmetric, four-bladed, cross-shaped fan on it. My Ford Bronco's 351W, however, has a weird asymmetric fan similar to the one in the photo linked below. Why are fans like these asymmetric? For the life of me I can't figure this one out and it's been killing me since I swapped engines in my Bronco.

Thanks,
Darren

Aloha, I don't know the real reason but it sure helps when you have to put your hand in there with a wrench to remove the mounting bolts.

Mahalo,
Howard

I would like to think that ease of getting to the bolts was the real reason but upon further thought, I don't think those high paid engineers would come up with something that intelligent!

actually, the asymetric blade positioning aroun the fan is ment to reduce 'syren' type fan noise.

Hi David,

Don't think so. That function was handled by the clutch hub. It cut noise as well as power requirements.

But, I could be wrong; been so many times before. :>)

Right on, in fact before electronic sirens they made motor driven symetric bladed fans in a chrome plated housing and placed them on the front fenders of emergency vehicles. I can remember an engineer at Ford designing and building an emission system air pump with symetric blades and wow did it howl.

Hi Darren,

I didn't go to your link, but this is done both for balance and for air flow characterics. They are almost always odd numbers of blades.
