Hi,

I need to change the center support bushing on the front axle of my Ford 2000 tractor. It was manufactured in 1973. It appears from the shop manual that this is a pretty simple, straight-forward procedure, but I was wondering if I need any special tools to press the old bushing out or the new bushing in.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom

The main thing you'll need is a can of good penetrant (PB Blaster) and a big air wrench and alot of patience. I changed one in a 3000 two weeks ago and it took me close to 2 hours with a 1"IR air wrench driven with a 150psi compressor at 85CFM (so the wrench had rated factory output of 2000ftlb, plus power to spare) to get the axel pivot pin out. Start spraying the end of the pin closest to the block/on the backside of the axel itself with penetrant several days before you even start to give it time to loosen up the rust in the threads before you even start working on it. If you can get a big impact just keep it hammering loosening and tightening it a little at the time til it decides to come out. The threads it screws into are in the frame so you don't want to mess them up. You can also use a tiorch to heat the casting around the threads a little, but be careful since your so close to the bottom tank on the radiator. Once you get it out, the bushing is a hardened steel split type, basically like they sometime use on king pins, that should drive right out. I just started the new one with a few taps around the outside edge to get it in and evened up and then laid a solid plate over it and hit it a few licks right in the middle to drive it home. I'd also suggest getting a new pivot pin before you start as they tend to wear along with the bushing. I had bought one from the Ford dealer along with some other parts for convience, but they ticked me off about crediting a bad part so I took it back and ordered it off this site. It looked just as good as the factory one, was about 1/2 the price, and it was on my step in less than two days. Lastly and most important, when you put it back together.... USE NEVER-SIEZE.... if you ever have to do it again you'll thank yourself for it, or the next man that does it won't cuss you for not doing it. Good luck, maybe it won't be as bad as I describe, but I've never seen one that wasn't at least close.....

Wayne,

Thanks for all of the information. I hope to order the parts this week and try my hand at it next week.

Thanks again,

Tom
