Having difficulty troubleshooting a problem. I went to start the JD and it started fine for a few minutes then died. I filled the gas tank up and still wouldn't start. I replaced spark plug; cleaned battery cables; carb cleaned it and replaced filter; still won't start. Any other suggestions? Thanks for your assistance on this. ::)

My Mom has one of these that I've had to work on several times. The ground wire on the bottom is bad to come loose. It was attached to the Engine Bolts which are also bad about vibrating loose. I reloacted the ground wire and so far have not had any more problems except tightning the engine bolts.

only time my stx30 failed me, a green wire had corroded thru & broke off below the engine. If a wire is hanging down, thats your problem wire.

The Kohler 12.5 engines in this mower have a lot of ignition module trouble. Check to see if you get a spark, then check all the safety switches also. If all these are working correctly you may want to have the module checked also.

First, Thankyou for the replies. I will have to find a schematic on this mower because I never received or found it when the mower was passed on to me by my father. I will check to see where or if that wire is attached to a bolt for a ground.
I am not familiar with where the module is located? As silly as it may sound asking; how can i check to see if the spark plug is sparking? Its in a very tight and narrow opening to get to.
Thankyou
Vicki

pull the plug hook up the plug wire to the plug again and hold the plug on some metel on the tractor or you can do it the hard way and just hole on to the plug and crank the engine over but it husts when you do it that way but you would know it you had spark hope this helps
