Hi,
I need a tractor with a really slow 1st gear, 3pt hitch, diesel, wide front, 2WD, narrow tires (13.6" or less). I have an IH 574 but its geared for drag racing and is useless for transplanting vegetable seedlings.

Any suggestions on models to look at, or tractors for sale that might fit the bill?

Thanks!

Paul

I have a Agco Allis 4650 that has the 16 speed with "creep". This thing is "slower than slow" in the lowest gear!!! They also made a 4660 that has 50 PTO hp.. They have everything you would want, diesel, independent PTO, live hydraulics, remotes, 3 point with draft, hydrostatic steering ect.. They were made in 2wd, or MFWD, and the 2wd models sell fairly cheap with low hours!! Mines been trouble free, and i'd buy another if needed! Robert

Look at the italian made tractors. Same and Lamborghini usually had a really slow range group. Modern tractors with Carraro transmission also have a slow range group, European JD 5000 series or Case-IH 2100 series for example.

My neighbor has a 656 hydro that would make a nice slow tractor. He has had it for a long time and keeps the fluids changed with no problems after over 6500 hours. This is a nice handling tractor also. Just my 2 cents. Mark

Mark,

You beat me to it!!

Excellant tractor and with that hydro, it can be pulled back to just barely "creap".

Good Call!!

Allan

I used to use my 861 Ford to pull my 2 row Holland transplanting strawberries. I would tweak the distributor static timing to make it run slow enough and still pull the trailer planter,

how slow is slow I had a 190XT A.C. that in low low would go about 1mphand I have a 801 Ford with a serman in front of the 4 speed and it goes even slower its rated at about 45 HP sounds like if you could find a ford with the over/under/stadard set up it might fit the bill or you could get a 800,900or one like that and put a sherman in it hope this helps or at least gives you some ideas

We have used several tractors, MF,IH, etc, in transplanting tobacco using a New Holland style machine(two people-one row) and have never needed a super low creeper gear. We ran about 900 to 1100 RPM in 1st Low and it gave us a slow walk. Even an IH 140 without low range worked fine.

Guess I don't quite understand the mechanics of the problem here. Most mid size tractors should gear down to creeper speeds in bottom gears. For instance a 5000 Ford 8spd will opearate at a slow walking ground speed in 1st/2nd at engine speed giving 540 PTO rpm.Guess I just don't understand what equipment you're working with not being familiar w/veggie farming.

Re the veggie transplanting: I need to transplant as close as 1 foot, and maybe tighter if I get a water wheel transplanter, thats why the need for the creeper. I plant a lot of head lettuce and lettuce plugs for salad mix, also into plastic. I tried using my IH 140 and its even faster, could only do about 1 in 3 transplants at a foot (that was strawberries, I gave up after that and planted 4 acres by hand this season).
