Somewhere I read that a MM "U" held the speed record at the salt flats in Utah. If I remember correctly, the speed was close to 60 MPH.

Does anyone know how a person can verify this?

Is there a link to the salt flat records somewhere?

Shucks! my Oliver Hart Parr 70 went 80 mph.
(course it was on a trailer coming from Mich) but it shure looked funny to see so many bugs splattered on the grill!!

Along with Dr. Cy Kosis I have read about the Simpson Jumbo used for oval track racing that could hit around 80 mph. I dont doubt it a bit do to the fact that I have a 1950 Custom tractor with a in line 8 cyl Chrysler flat head motor that will flat get with the program. I never had it above 45 to 50 mph only because that is fast enough for me. If I was to guess it would run around 60 + mph at 4000 rpm. The awesome thing about it is it will do this in a drag race with a track length of 200 feet long. The only problems I have is shifting the New Process transmission corectly to do this. One of our games we do at the tractor rodeo is a drag race. We run one tractor at a time. Fastes time wins.

I'd like a little more info on your 'drag' race.
My Love rowcrop has a New Process 5 speed with
an Eaton two-speed and it shifts very smooth.
Everything has been rebuilt and I havent' run for
pink slips yet, but I'd be a contender.

I was down at the local barbershop thursday and the barber handed me a printout from an article in Mother Earth News where a fellow built a tractor out of a Dodge truck front end and two 4 speed transmissions. It went on describing it and toward the end of the article it said it was capable of speeds of 80 mph. Didn't say whether the owner tried it, had 28" tractor tires on the back which I thought to myself "damned if I'd try it on those"! (designed for not over probably 20 mph) It may be on their website if you type in Mother Earth News in a search engine. Fred OH

I just can't help it but I gotta set the record straight. In the spring of 1921, a local guy from Jake's Corner, Yukon by the name of Pineapple Jim Henry made it from Los Angeles to New York in 6 days, 7 hours and 23 minutes in a tractor whose name cannot be even thought of on the YT tractor site. Pineapple Jim died soon after from race exhilaration in his left ventricle.

A friend of mines dad used to drive a truck and back when they had those old gas international trucks an Amaish or Mininite (spelling) passed him on the highway. They used an old truck bed as a trailer and hooked the tractor PTO to the drive shaft of the truck bed.

If you want to try and break the record, start with an orchard model. They are generally equipped with a road gear, so you could leave the orchard with a wagon load of fruit, and drive straight into town to market, beating the other growers. First guy there got the best price.

One of my old tractor books has an account of Raymond Johnson, a man who used to race a Jumbo Simpson at County Fairs and usually averaged over sixty mph to win. It also tells of him getting stopped by a Nebraska Highway Patrol for exceeding 70 mph.

Jumbos used a Chrysler industial engine, 5 speed Dodge truck transmission and a 2 ton Dodge truck rearend. Johnson reportedly replaced his tranny with a 10 speed Dodge truck trans with overdrive.

I'll bet that was a scary ride on a tricycle rowcrop tractor.

I read the article posted and have heard of that story.Mr. johnson i belive lived in fremont but has passed away and the tractor was auctioned off.Now the good news. I have a sister tractor identical to that one.My grand father always came in second to mr johnson in thoes races, they were held in lincoln Ne. Now iam looking to sell mine.Any intrest or some one you know let me know.

I've never seen anything about a MM U speed record like that on the MM website. Their fastest production tractor-The UDLX-was supposed to be capable of about 40 mph, though.

yeah but I thought it was Barney Oldfield on an Allis Chalmers U 64.28 MPH at Dallas. Then Ab Jenkins set the record at the Flats at 67.877

First there would have to be a legitimate reason for doing so,such as the Allis/rubber tire promo.Tractors are about Power not Speed,and how much work they'll do on how little fuel.The high speeds that the Love,Moline UDLX,Silver King and others were capable of were actually quite unsafe on a vehicle w/o suspension,poor steering geometry and high center of gravity.I'm sure a custom tractor could be built for such a record attempt,BUT if it were built would it BE a tractor or a THING like a tractor?Anything can be done with enough money and engineering,the WHY is the sticky part.Not trying to be smart here,just put out the facts..... .And got busted twice for speeding in my youth on a hot Ford Jube,w/Sherman step up and tall tires,32&35 in a 25 zone.Loved that lil Dorf :)

Have seen several variation of Unimog for off road firefighting,snow plowing/blowing,ag applications.More of a AWD truck than a tractor,but is used as both on a lot of small european farms.Options include front,rear,center PTOs,various front/rear hitches etc,an interesting vehicle to say the least.Now part of Daimler-Chrysler.
