Ailing Farmall H

I need help. I have a Farmall H that runs for about 40secs. IT then starts straining and shuts down. Sometimes if I pull the choke and then throw it back open, it runs again for another 40 secs. and does the same thing all over. Valves are adjusted correctly. The tractor has new points, plugs and a rebuilt carb. I had old smelling gas, but I flushed it out and added new gasoline. Anybody have any ideas. Thanks.

Had a similar problem with my M. Turned out it was worn distributor bushings. If the gas line is ok and all other things are ok check that.

I had the same problem with my 47 H. I removed the tank and sealed it. If there is crud in the tank now there will always be crud in the tank. there is a kit from the eastwood company that takes care of this problem. it took me 9 1/2 hours. to complete the process of redoing the tank but it is like new on the inside and will stay like that too. I tried all of the other ways of fixing it to try to save a buck butm it is not worth it.(just frustrating)

I had a similar problem with my H, The fitting where the sediment bowl attaches to the tank was gummed up. I removed and cleaned it, and also cleaned the screen at the end of the fuel line. Then I had the same problem, the tractor would start and run for a couple of minutes then die out and I couldn't get it to start unless I left it sit for 30 minutes. I took off the sediment bowl and had only a trickle of fuel, I used an air tank to blow out the dirt I had where the fuel comes into the sediment bowl. no trouble since.

You've got crud in the tank, a sticking needle valve in the carb, or both. Draining out the old gas and putting in new sometimes is not enough, because the new gas will dissolve the sticky tar left over from the old gas, and cause problems just like you are experiencing. A thorough tank cleaning may be in order. For now, try taking the fuel line loose from the carb, and spray some carb cleaner into the carb to dissolve any tar on the needle valve, and also, while the fuel line is loose, open the petcock on the sediment bowl and check for fuel flow, there should be a good strong stream. If not, you will need to clean the sediment bowl, including the screen in the top of the assembly. Also, open the petcock while the bowl is off, and check again for fuel flow, if no or little flow, you have crud in the tank, and that is a story in itself.

Pull the fuel line off at the carb, and let fuel flow into a coffee can or something that you can see into good. Check and make sure it has a good flow. Also make sure that you dont have any small particles of rust/trash left over from flushing the tank. Sometimes the nipple going into the fuel tank can partially clog with rust/trash and cause those same symptoms, and unless the tank was removed from the tractor and vatted, it can still have trash in it. Another possibility is that something stayed in the lines when you flushed out the tank, and got into your freshly rebuilt carburetor.

Sure sounds like an obstruction in the fuel line. Try pulling the drain plug from the bottom of the carb and let the fuel flow out for a little while. It it slows to a trickle I'd check the gas tank outlet and the filter at the connection to the carb.
