massey 333 genarator

I recently purchased 333 it has a car altnator on it i would like to put it back to orginal could anyone tell me if it had a 6 volt or 12 volt system

hi bob, i got a 444. it is my understanding that they came with 12 volt alternators from the factory.

in 54 to 57 i'am quite sure there was no such thing as a alternator? they all had gen.

Marlowe,

You’re right. The first alternator I ever saw was along about '61 and most manufactures didn't make the change over until the early '63s if my memory serves me right. That was quite a while ago! :>)

These new models had the huge advantage of being able to charge at higher rates at lower Rpm’s and made use of slip rings rather than a commutator.

Just like the newer induction type starters of today, this stopped the problem of the unit cannibalizing itself and eating it's own brushes.

Regulators started dropping out in the early ‘70s, as I recall, and some really good designs started showing up around 1980 with the advent of the single wire alternator.

Then, the marketing guys got their fingers in the pie and that 1980’s alternator, which sold for $54 at that time, now will ding you somewhere around $600 using the same technology. Go figure.

thank you very much for your respone something i forgot to ask is the wiring harnes the same as a 33 , 44 if not could someone e mail a diagram for a 333

Hi Bob,

Look at your battery. 3 cells are 6v and 6 cells are 12v. Or put a VOM across it if it is 'sealed' and you can't see how many cells it has.

hi I have a massey 333 and it has a 12 volt positive ground electeric system my 444 has a prestolite generator my333 has a autolite
