OT: keeping woodpeckers away

I know this has nothing to do with tractors but I built my house 5 years ago and woodpeckers are slowly pecking away at my wood trim, the house is T-111 siding too by the way, which they are not destroying. Does anybody know what is a good solution to keeping them away other then a shotgun. Thanks in advance.

Rick,

Been there, done that. I had a woodpecker that put 7 holes in my cedar siding. He would peck through that then through the vapor barrier and take out the insulation. I first spotted the problem when I found pink insulation on the ground. I tried the owl trick - no luck. I took a 2 foot long rubber snake and stapled it across two of the holes - it just made a new hole next to the snake! I finally got him one Sunday afternoon during a Packer game. I saw the insulation floating down past the window. I went outside with my 12 gauge. When he flew away from the house and landed on a tree, I gave him a dose of #8 shot. It must have taught him a good lesson cuz he never got up off the ground after that. I have not had any more problems since then.
If you can't use a shotgun where you live, try a good pump BB/pellet gun. I know you would like to let this thing live, but for some reason this woodpecker has chosen your house and no amount of loving, education, ranting, etc., will change his mind.

I'll try to catch the one that is hanging around my house and send him to you as a breeder. He like to get on the back of the stop sign pole on the corner and when he goes to work on the sign, it sound just like an alarm clock. Him and his kids will probably be so stupid they'd starve to death.

I've tied tinfoil pie plates to the eave of the house near where the little $#%^&* were pecking. The movement sends them packing every time. Only take them down after a few days as they hit the house and keep the missus awake.

Same here in SW Michigan. They go after the imitation composite boards which have the glue holding them together. I just use Bondo and fill it in then paint over. Makes a quick repair since the Bondo sets up in 15 minutes and can be immediately painted over. They don't come back to the same site at least.

Just a thought, but the woodpeckers are going after insects. Maybe spraying your house with some kind of insecticide to eliminate the bugs would help. If there is no source of food, the woodpeckers would leave, wouldn't they?
Also, don't think that the woodpeckers won't damage your siding, I once had a woodpecker that was apparently going after the bugs in my rooftop T.V. antennae, the bird didn't quit until it had succeded in drilling completely through one of the prongs and breaking it off. Woodpeckers are very hard headed little you know whats.

We had a very serious woodpecker damage problem in our cabin. Not allowed to shoot the woodpeckers....so we took some plain old tin can lids and put them over the damaged sites. Then we painted the metal lids to match the siding. It didn't look as bad as you might imagine...and the woodpecker damage came to a halt. A very cost effective solution. Hope this helps.

How about a plastic Owl or a Hawk decoy? thats what some people use over here to scare swallows and house martins away from their houses so that they won't try and nest under their eaves.

Plastic Owls work good up here but remember to move the Owl around place to place or the woodpecker will soon know it's a dummy and start all over good luck, or hit it with a good volume of water
