I need to develop a way to fertilize rows of Christmas trees. Currently, for another operation, I pass through each row. I am hoping for a 12 volt (my pto is in use for the other operation) method of operating a fertilizer that will discharge to one side only, (not broadcast the path between the rows). I have the abilities to modify or fabricate, but I am hoping for some advice to get started as I have not fertilized before.
Also helpful would be what models of fertilizers are reliable, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Bill

Bill, I do not profess to know what Christmas Trees require in the way of fertilizer. But I do know that my fruit trees require fertilizer be applied around the "drip line" (aka... the circular area around the tree, below the outer ends of the branches). this area (the dripline) is where the small roots of the tree take up the nutrients. The larger roots near the base of the tree do not take up nutrients... the larger roots just transfer the nutrients to the trunk from the small roots. Thus, fertilizer that is applied outside OR inside of the dripline may be partially wasted. I don't know this for a fact... But it holds to reason that if this application of fertilizer holds true for fruit trees and hardwoods... it ought to hold true for Christmas Trees.

It may be something to think about. You may want to design something that would apply (incorporate) a string of fertilizer around the dripline of the trees... instead of broadcasting it!

Just a suggestion!

Bill, how many trees / rows are you doing? I had 15 acres of Douglas Fir / Nobel and Frasers. We found it worked well to apply by hand. The fertilizer gets where it is supposed to go. The root zone is is small on young trees and there is a lot of empty space in a 5 X 5 or 6 X 4 planting.

I have a neighbor who fertilizes 10 acres of blueberries this way also - although he drives his tractor between the rows with a fertilizer bucket between his legs.

If you still want a spreader to pull behind the tractor, look for a row cultivator / side dresser. The side dresser runs off a wheel and dribbles out the fertilizer through a tube. With a little modification, I'm sure you can make it work.

If you can't find anything at your local dealer, contact Gandy directly in Owatonna, MN. (507)451-5430.
