What do y'all think was the best all round work tractor between the Allis WD45, Super M Farmall, Super 88 Oliver, and John Deere G. These seem to have been the most popular big tractors of the mid 1950's. I really enjoy hearing the experiences of the people who plowed, disked, and combined with these tractors. I have two of the four listed and I have really been impressed with what they can still do.

If you want to do some serious work for half the fuel consumption & not be concerned about break-downs & repairs , put all of the above out behind the barn & buy a Fordson Major Diesel. It's track record speaks for itself. Check it out! Don

Say what you will between the M and the G, most G's still have the rearend that Deere installed new, most M's in our area didn't. Some were on their third by the time the 806's came out. M is a good tractor though! Can't beat the sound of a G pulling a plow through a hard spot.

Seemed like the Olivers always sounded good, until the load got to them, then the rpms's would drop off a cliff... The Allis's, good loader tractors, and baler tractors, but very few snap coupler plows in our area, and with a trailer plow they didn't hack it. Neighbor had a straight M, and a WD-45, M outpulled the WD-45 every time with a trailer plow, usually in 3rd.

My two cents...

Just my 2 cents, I learned how to drive a tractor on a Case SC. When my dad got a used G, it seemed like a step up to the moon. We pulled a 3-16 wheel mounted plow through some of the stickiest mud in Ohio. 2nd gear almost all of the time. One night about 2 am, the muffler fell off and since it had been a wet spring and we were late getting the crop in, I kicked the muffler off onto the plowed ground and kept going. Couldn't hear for three days.

Folks The 88 may have a bit more power but you can only pull your weight, same problem with the wd45 no weight. The super M has it all over the other two in this catagory. Now for you wrenchers out there their should be no debate, engine wise it would be sm,wd and then oliver. It may leave a bad taste but those wauckashaws (sp)? were not the best. Our 77 had 4 majors to the smta s one and that was done for more power (Damn nh 717 choppers). But one mans meat is anothers poison ED oyea the 520 was too cheap to pass up

Oliver S88 live hydraulics, 3-point hitch (although not real common) independent live PTO, 6 speed trans.

I have and restore a lot of red tractors. I really dislike JD's (just my own little bias) so when I want to get some serious work done, I fire up dad's old 88. Never operated any "super" tractors but the Oliver with the 6 speed tranny and the 6 cylinder engine to me just couldn't be beat.

Just my opinion.

Dan

Well, I have been told that a "G" JD under a heavy load will burn 7 Gallons of Gas an hour...!! I KNOW that a "70" Gas in our field burned that much..!! Now, our AC WD-45's averaged 1 1/3 gallons per Acre with 4-14" semi-mounted Plows, or in a 16 hour day plowing would go thru about 35 gallons each..NOT BAD.. How many tractors of 85 horse power will pull an 8 Bottom plow..???? NONE.. Compact versatile and powerful, it was a HUGE Milestone in tractor development...!! When they were manufactured, they couldn't make them fast enough to keep up with demand... I like Both shades of Green, and Trucks are Red, But---the King is Orange....!!! My Vote is for the AC...!!!!

Well, half of any equipment is SET-UP...!! Yes, we have all the wheels loaded, and we DO have Yellow Wax, Black Wax , Jack Wax, clay etc, and these WILL Plow any of it..and I bet that soil will make ANY tractor SNORT..!! AND virtually NEVER drop out of 2nd gear...Sure, the front may side some, but that is half the fun of it..!! Ours came with the semi-mounted 4-14" from the dealer..JD would not guarantee the 620 to pull 4-14" plows, and AC did, and they DO....!! Pound for Pound the Best tractor ever made..!!

The "G" was a low compression all-fuel engine that was designed to run on cheap refinery left overs, not expensive gasoline. With four to one compression , what do you expect? Any 70 gas that burned 7 gallons per hour had both a plugged aircleaner and the main plus idle jets set full rich. Our 70 gas is hard pressed to burn 4 gallons an hour. The 70 diesel would barely burn 2 gallons per hour. It's fuel efficiency still beats many new tractors. The 520/620/720 gas tractors all hold records or near records for gasoline tractor fuel efficiency tested at Nebraska.

Ha..!! I NEVER carried SO much gas, as I did to that "70"...!! It had a fresh valve job, and seemed to run ok.. It pulled a 3-14" pull-type plow, NO cover boards or Jointers, and in a field 1/2 Mile long, I would pass him every-other round with my AC WD-45, pulling 4-14"'s, CoverBoards, Extended landslides, and all AND plowing a GOOD 7" deep... I wanted to set the governors up on the 70, but the boy wouldn't let me...it would pull down just a little, and he would have to shift gears....!! I KNOW that we carried at least 2 gallons for the 70, to 1 for the AC..Never did get that 70 Full, either..!!

What about MM?
My UB pulls 3-16's in 3rd gear in red shale soil.
I plow deep with Radex plow shares.
The tractor works hard, but it seems to like it.

Dad really loved his '47 MM-U... he still tells stories of passing JD 'G's and IH Ms. I never got to run it, but my brothers have fond memories.

I did work his '50 MM-G. Plowed with a 4-14s. Never pulled down. Just got meaner sounding. I'd have to pull back on the throttle or I'd over run the 806 with 5-14s on hills. I loved that old MM-G.

Those old MMs were nice to plow with.

Why did you continue wasting so much fuel using a tractor that was so far out of spec from what it was from the factory? With numbers that far off from the Nebraska tests did you have extra fuel money to burn? If it would only pull 3-14's it and no detectable torque rise when lugged and was way down on peak power too. Sounds like it may have been running on Champion resistor plugs and an oilbath aircleaner with the mesh plugged to the top. Lack of oilbath maintenance and the wrong oil? How many valve grinds did it have, total hours and piston to bore clearance? When something isn't working right why don't you repair it? Or was service only done when the equipment failed to move?

Having worked all of them there is no doubt the Super M is first. Around here wd45's were called pile makers, put 3-14's on them they wouldn't move them unless it was snap coupler Than it left piles of dirt where it was setting still spinning the wheels till it traction booster would raise it to get it moving. Next hard spot you went through it again. The G was a good tractor but wasn't a Super m

The Super M and the Super 88 would be close for 1st place with the Oliver probably having a slight advantage. The WD-45 would definitly be in last place.

I'd have to say the oliver super 88 its the biggest in HP at 54 the JD-G is38HP the Super M is 46 and I won't even say on the allis. The 88 has the power and the pull,as far as the Farmall and the JD I'd have a hard time picking second place there. But what can I say I like green amd red more then orange lol

Well since "old" won't say then I will, Allis WD45 had a very respectable 45 pto hp. Horsepower is not the only factor in a good work tractor. Yes, the Allis was not as big as the others in its class, but I'll fill those rears with fluid and hook it to an AC mounted "snap coupler" moldboard plow and be right on your tailwheel. All these tractors are very solid and I apologize for not throwing the Minnie Moe U series in my first posting.

well, out of those listed, im gonna have to say the JD G, great on fuel, great lugging power, and spare power when you need it. One bad thing, is the not so slow 1st gear.
