I am trying to buy a used tag-along equipment trailer. One unit has "vacuum over hydraulic" brakes. Could someone tell me how these work, specifically, what is needed at the truck/trailer hook-up. Also, they seem to be old technology; are they dependable?

Vacum brakes are smoother in braking ,more reliable than Elec.no wires magnet to replace , some say slower than air if they are slower not by much Vacum brakes was used on most and the largest trucks untill air brakes came in to use about 1950 . Good system , best brakes for under 15,000 Lb. if your pulling truck did not have air brakes

I prefer air brakes over all the others but snowey is right. If the truck doesn't have air brakes the trailer can't have them. Vacuum brakes are better than electric brakes.

Thanks: The web site for the kits talk about the need for a vacuum pump. Can I not tap into the existing vacuum booster on my truck?

You'll need a control unit under the hood and a vacuum source; manual override in the cab; two vacuum hoses to rear of truck with connectors; got mine from Redline( hhttp://www.tjtrailers.com/store/vacuum-hydraulic-kits.html; or do a search for Redline trailer brakes); personally like vacuum/hydraulic better than electric.
