Do any of you tow double axle trailers loaded with small tractors like Fords and Fergies behind a Chevy Tahoe? Is the Tahoe heavy enough to tow a Hudson 16 ft. trailer loaded with a 4,000 lb tractor and implement? I have sold my Suburban and need to get something, and a couple of local Tahoes look appealing if they will do the job. Of course, I would get a brake box installed, if it isn't present when I buy the vehicle. I have electric brakes on one axle of the trailer. Thanks for replies.

I have used our Tahoe for towing my tractor & other equipment. I believe the towing capacity is 8,000 lbs. I would have a trailer with brakes on any towing job. I never had any problems. I did find that with double axle trailers are sensitive to weight distribution and tire pressure. I had one walking around on me real bad - I stopped at a tire store and had them check my pressure - evened everything out and worked out great. The tahoe is one tough truck. I have never had a trans or engine problem in 200,000 + miles. The most reliable vehichle I have ever owned. My 2c Irv

Anyone pulling a trailer with a light vehicle would ( and WILL) eventually learn that YOU MUST have anti-Sway Dampers on the hitch, to prevent a Dangerous condition where the sway progresses and eventually takes over and the vehicle Rolls Over--out of control.. I see them on Darned FEW hitches...and I HAVE seen some awful wrecks because of it... Get them, and USE them...they very well may SAVE your LIFE...!!

For lots of towing a heavier vehicle will work better. For occasional use a Tahoe will work fine. We have one and use it to pull a 5000 lb camper. It pulls it very easily, both around town, and on the highway. I would get a trailer with brakes on both axles no matter what i was pulling it with.

I wouldn't try to tow a tractor with the Tahoe, They are not much more than a glorified station wagon. It doesn't have the frame strenght,it is a light duty trans, springs, and rear axle. For the same money you could probably get a decent 3/4 or 1ton pickup that is more suited for heavy duty work, with a heavier trans and axles and E rated tires.

I also think the shorter Tahoe is going to result in more sway on the trailor.

I have to agree with the above... when towing, the heavier (the tow vehicle), the better! In the heavier vehicles, every system (frame, brakes, steering, suspension & cooling) is built for more severe service... and, you have that much more weight to counteract the weight of what's being towed. You can get a trailer moving with just about anything... the trick is to stop it SAFELY!!!

I've got a couple of Chevy K-5 Blazers. Basically, the same thing as a Tahoe, (Chevy Blazer name changed to Tahoe, and GMC Jimmy name changed to Yukon), basically a shortened 1/2 truck. I've towed my 18' double-axle trailer with a 5,500 lb. dozer on it with both of them. Definitely a bit much for them. I live in a moutainous area, probably wouldn't be so bad on level and smooth roads and perhaps with an equalizer hitch added. I don't like trusting my life to the trailer brakes, however, and that's what I was doing coming down a steep hill with the Blazer. Anyway, towing the same with my 3/4 ton Suburban works much nicer. It's a beefed up version with a heavy suspension, 11,000 lb. hitch, oversize brakes, T-400 trans., diesel engine, etc. That being said, I've had a few occasions, coming down a very steep dirt road, where the one axle on my trailer with brakes locked up the wheels, and I hit the brakes on the Suburban, and still kept on going, i.e. I couldn't stop - the weight kept on pusing me. Just 20 feet or so, no big deal except I did go right through a stop sign. I could have made someone kind of sad if they were coming through at the time. After those episodes with the Suburban, I don't want to do the towing with the lighter Blazers anymore. Your load is lighter, but if you're going to do it with the Tahoe, you'd better at least put brakes on the second trailer axle. Also, if you're going to have the 4 speed overdrive automatic, better put a cooler on it, and try not to put it in overdrive while towing. On the older Tahoes, you can unplug the lockup torque converter and they tow much better. Don't know about the one you're getting.
