When I bought my SMTA I had a customer of mine who rents BIG covered car haulers ship it up from central Illinois. It was fair but took a long while waiting for an empty slot in a truck. Same with the trucker schedule here when I tried it.
Does anyone know if any of the national rental places has an outfit that could handle a tractor that size? The MTA was weighed prior to shipping and came in at 7200 lbs. I was thinking of getting a second one but don't want to have to wait at the mercy of shippers. Once I have it home I don't need to haul it anymore.

Try Hertz rental, NationsRents, or look at some local rental marts for a good heavy trailer. If that fails, e-mail me, and I'll give you my rates for hauling. I do SOME tractor hauling. I have a 14,000lb gooseneck. John

Thank you. I absolutely will if the deal goes through. Never forget the first tractor I bought.
Pretty exciting when the truck pulls up the road.
I want to thank all the people who added their input here, I got a lot of good advice. I hope y'all read this and have a happy holiday!

Try a Home moving company like Allied. I have a friend who works for the local agent.(Barry , throw a comment in here to keep me straight if you read this) He tells me they are always looking for partal loads. They will pick up and deliver door to door. He has moved most anything you can think of so a tractor is no big deal to them. Just contact a local agent to get more info.

What about Hertz? I was shopping around last year trying to rent a dozer. Never even thought of them until they came up on a web search. Looks like they rent about everything.

Dave,

Whereabouts in MI are you and where is the tractor you might buy? I make runs from FL/TX up towards IL/WI/MI and then over to PA from time to time. I may wait 'til the snow and ice go away before I go on the next one though. I also know a few other fellows that run the roads sometimes too.

I'm between Lansing & Detroit and the tractor is outside Chicago. If I make this deal I can see me waiting until nicer weather to get it home. Just stick it in the closest storage unit if the seller can't store it. It's a possibility. I have one here already that does most of my work for me.

I had a friend that has a metal building company when hestarted he needed a dozer so he bought 2 nice JD 350's 200 miles away. He drove home rented a pair of big Uhaul trucks and some ply wood. He laid the plywood down so the tracks wouldnt kill the floor and drove a machine in each truck bound them mdown and came home. At the time our local Uhaul renters were bad about robbing folks with charges and sch added onto the trucks. My friend got all the way home and the last 20 miles hit a tree that fell in the road. the dozer blade dented the back of the cab and killed the tie downs in the sides of the bed. They ranted abit but he didnt really care.

On subject of damaging rental trucks, years ago, I had a load to shift, it tore a BIG hole in a new Ryder Box Truck. It only had 900 miles on it. I had paid the optional $15.00/day damage waiver, they said not to worry about it. By the way, if renting a truck, always document any damage before leaving lot. Another rental firm tried to charge me for some obviously old damage to a truck.

From where to where is the tractor being hauled ?

United Rentals may have a straight large enough for you to rent. I've had occasional luck with home town excavation contractors. One other place to check is at a used semi and long haul trailer dealer, they know of many of the smaller outfits that may be able to transport it for you.

there are a couple haulers around here that try to make a living going to farm auctions and hauling peoples stuff home for them, but they would also gladly go out of state for the right amount of green, they charge by the loaded mile and have big 18 wheelers with lo-boys. Some farm equipment dealers would also haul for you. Check around and see who does what is my advice.
hope this helps,
Jonathan

If all tractors were the size of your M, and the
muffler removed, the steering wheel would be the
height; no duals, so about 84" width. However, so
many variables, cabs, duals, PFA, loaders, the
rental company would probably pay massive premiums
for insurance, due to risk of overloads, improper
tie down, etc. Even the U-Haul box trucks, to move
apartment furniture, appear hammered. Imagine the
abuse on a rental, that hauled a dozer on a night
run, instead of the "small Ford tractor". Doubt it
would be a budget deal, with the rig being so
vulnerable to misuse, high stress, breakdown.

Did a little on line checkin,Uhaul 26' maxes at about 6700lbs load,Ryder 24' will handle 11,000 lb load, limited by just over 7'x7'rear door.I've never really been asked what I'm hauling in a rental tk/trailer.When you rent the truck, you are the one responsible for it and cargo until returned.Company is only responsible for providing safe/legal vehicle per YOUR specs.

Actually, my MTA was 92" to the outside of the tires when I had it trucked up here if I remember right. That amounted to 1/2" clearance on either side in the van. I give a lot of credit to the ole boy who drove it in there. I believe the 100" axle was an option on these but would have to check the manual.

Yes, 100in. rear axles were an option, at least for the H. The standard axle was 75.5in. from outside edge to outside edge. I believe IH measured the 100in. (and other tire widths) from the middle of the tires, judging from the illustration in my H manual. The other reason I think this, is the wheels can be extened to a max width of 90 3/4in. at outside edges of wheels on the standard axle. So what would be the point of the 100 inchers if this wasn't so?
