I need some help. I have a 1963 Massey Ferguson Super 90.It has a perkins desil motor. The problem is that the #4 cylinder has a push rod stuck. It is holding a valve partially open at all times. Where do I start? Thank you in advance. Walter Mott PS I posted this on the Massey board about 2 weeks ago... no response.

MF Super 90. Does anyone out there have a copy of the original specification sheet? If so could a copy be e-mailed. Thanks

Sent you a comment about the possibility of the push rod resting on the block rather than on the lifter itself. Looked at a "90" and it looks like if the side cover which has the oil fill tube in it were removed, a person might be able to see by even using a small mirror if the push rod is where it is supposed to be or if the lifter is actually stuck and unable to move. Might be worth checking.

check to be sure the push rod is seated in the lifter and not on the block around the lifter. Have seen this happen more than once. Have seen bent pushrods and broken rockers because of this. When the piston reaches the top of it's stroke and hits the valve held partially open because of this it will sometimes bend the valve stem. You can remove the "stuck" pushrod and use a piece of stiff wire such as welding rod with the flux removed and put it on top of the lifter and crank the engine with the fuel shut off while pushing down on the wire to determine if the lifter is actually stuck or moving.

it sounds like a lifter is stuck but are you sure the push rod is stuck it could be a guide has slid down and just holding the valve open. do you have the valve cover off? you might have a broken spring or the nut on the tapet came loose. if you don't have the cover off then this is where you have to start but you might have done this and if it is for sure that the push rod is stuck then it is a lifter thing

I just had a valve job. The problem existed pryor to this. How much of a tear down is involved in getting to the lifter?

do you still have the head off if not then you got to pull it again .but first i think it sounds like you have run the tractor with the valve cover off? if this is so then there was no movement in that push rod? is it the very last rod close to the driver?
