best place to buy rear tractor tires?

I just acquired a '47 John Deere B (a very cuddly tractor!), and it will be needing new rubber in the rear. What is the best place to buy new tires and tubes? Call local tractor dealers? Wait for a tractor show? Order online (I buy car tires from tire rack online).

I'm afraid new rear tires will cost almost as much as I paid for the tractor!

I have used Tire Town to get Firestone blems to fit a Case manure spreader. I live only 13 miles from one of their stores. Very good prices. If you are in Leesburg, VA, shipping could be expensive, given the distance.

Lynn, the usefullness of those tractors are long gone. They were only built to replace a pair of mules in the first place, and were dangerous as a mad dog at a picnic. From the looks of the tire, it most likely can be repaired, as tractor tires don't have to be all that good. You also could fill them with water, if it is just a slow leak and it would take a long time to leak back down. Won't hurt for the water to freeze, long as it's not operated, and it sure won't leak out. Comments about this post are welcome. alvinnms

Alvin, I have owned several tractors of the type that Lynn has.(antiques) They include several different brands and sizes and all have proven to be very useful. They also provide a link to my agricultural heritage that is worth much more than the actual economic usefullness of the machine. As far as their safety is concerned, any machine is only as safe as the trained operator. I think that point as been made several times before on this forum and others. By the way, the tractors safety is closely linked to the condition of the tires on the machine. Assuming that the tractor is used for more than a lawn ornament, poor tires should be replaced and leaky tires should be repaired correctly. That said, the best place to buy tractor tires is a full service ag tire shop equipped to sell, install and service ag type tires. Shop around your area, your likely to find a good one close.

...huh? I recently posted a question about the danger of tricycle tractors vs wide front, and the overwhelming concensus is that unless you are using a loader, there is no significantly greater risk of tipping a narrow front, provided you have the tired filled (which these are). It is a matter of how careless the driver is.

This is a restoration project for me that will be used for occasional things on our hobby farm. So, it will be plenty useful for me. My other obsolete tractors (a 1957 Ford 650 and a 1975 Case 580B backhoe) serve me quite well, thank you. And this nice old JD will be a handy addition to the stable as well as a thing of beauty.

Don't overlook the local mom and pop tire store. The kind that carry a few on name brand lines but can get you anything you want. Probably won't have any tractor tires in stock but can get them in a few days.

I bought a couple of fronts for my Ford 2N from Miller tire, and they were cheap. But when I priced rears for my Farmall BN, I found the local Tire store was competitive, and mounted them for free. Plus they wer cool about taking the tires off the rim, and then waiting a week or two till I could sandblast and paint the rims. I would buy local if not that expensive.

Two years ago I replaced both rear tires and tubes on my MF35 for less than $450 at a local Goodyear dealer. Are your's an oddball size?

Don't buy from a tractor dealer! Buy from a heavy equipment tire dealer or ag tire dealer. Depends on what size you need this may get to be very expensive. You may be able to find some used ones at an auction if you can wait. Or post an ad for used tires and their size. Be glad you aren't replacing the drive tires on a large combine!

You can pick up fair looking tires at equipment auctions, and maybe put a boot over a hole, as you won't be doing very much work. The ones you already have may can be repaired, with a new tube and boot, or liner. About $135.00 each, Other wise be prepared to pay out about $800.00. Hold on to your wallet!!! New rear tires will most likely cost as much as you paid for the tractor,Post into the want-ads and see if someone has take-offs OR USED tires. or find someone else that needs tires and maybe you can get a quantity discount!!

I'm sure your local dealer would appreciate the business, I always try to keep my business in the community or county. It doesn't pay to buy far away, some people think they are getting a bargain out of town but there are no bargains like home. I knew an older gentleman that would drive all over pricing things before he purchased, it didn't matter what it was from a car to a tire. He maybe put on over 500 miles before he made the deal and then bragged about what he saved. He was the guy that would also put saw horses at the end of his driveway when it rained so that nobody would mess up his drive with tracks. Weird!
