Was told by a friend to ask advise on this site he found it by accident and thought it might be helpful for information. Anyway, just back home from a trip from rural Iowa to look over things left to my wife from her recently deceased uncle. He had farmed for many years and Ann used to visit he and his wife, spending time on the farm. Being the only relative alive she inherited what was left. House with barns and sheds along with all kinds of farm equipment laying out in the large grove. In going through one of the sheds behind some tin and tarps was an old tractor(very small) which was covered in dust. It had a couple of flat tires, but was generally in pretty nice condition. My wife remembered that the uncle put this away when she was little saying it would be valuable some day. It is somewhat faded ,John Deere tractor with the decal reading a 32 and some other #. The neighbor stopped by when we were there so I showed him it and he seemed kind of interested. Before we left for home he had a car (98 taurus) he wanted to trade for the JD. I said I would think about it, did not really want the car. Now he has called and offered $3500 for the tractor. Always need cash, is this a fair deal?

I live in central Iowa and my folks in west central Iowa. E mail if I can help. Be careful letting to many people know about it. My neighbor went to a nursing home a while back. Someone helped themselves to a JD 60 and a bunch of parts off a B.

Find out what it is! I'm from the Davenport IA area & there was a 10 acre plot of old equipment cleaned out a couple years ago near Hwy 61 & I280. The scrap iron company was told to check the serial numbers on all the equipment. They found one of Deere's prototype dozers made from an A. Our neighbor Ray who's 78 used to run it all the time when he was a kid. It went up for auction & brought something like $172,000. So check it out. Especially if it's a Deere.

If I where you I'd make sure you had someone on the place to make sure nothing grew legs and walked off and also make sure they had a shot gun

Considering that you now have something that may be very valuable and all this needs to be looked after lest it vanish I would have a good talk with the neighbor to see what service he may be able to provide for you. Local folks do have ways of making sure that things stay put. His offer could turn out to be ( as they say) priceless.

RAR/IA has the right idea, find someone you can trust to at least keep an eye on the place. The wife and recently attended an estate auction which had listed a large collection of very desirable/collectible glassware. There was no one living in the house, and it was in a rather remote location. Sometime between when the sale bill was posted, and the day of the auction, most of that glassware disappeared. You cannot be to careful. I live in southwest Iowa, E-mail me if I may be of service.

You need to get back out there and secure any valuable equipment in storage. If you wait they'll rob you blind. They already know you ain't around. If you won't sell it to them they may just come and take it. You would never know and would not be able to prove it if you dont have a inventory and serial numbers documented. Pictures wont hurt either.

All I can do is reiterate what the other folks have said.

1-DON'T trade it for the car!
2-Find out what models it is.
3-If the neighbor is willing to cough up $3500.00, it's got to be worth more than that.

I highly recommend that you find out on the John Deere discussion board what model tractor that is. If your wifes uncle told her that it would be worth a lot of money one day and he really did mean it then it probably is a rare machine. DONT TRADE IT FOR THE CAR. And dont take $3500 for it until you find out the model and what it is worth.

The tractor may be a 320 John Deere.These are valuable tractors. A 320 utility sold near here for 13,000.This same person bought one in Florida for around 17,000.There are 320 Standards, 320 utility's and the very rare 320 Southern Special. Might be a good idea to check the serial # and have someone you can trust check it closer.

Call me if the tractor is east of I-35 and south of I-80 or close. I like to work on old tractors and have a friend that is into JD's. Would be interested in looking at your tractor, etc.

What are you going to do with the farm?

Please consider keeping it and perserving the house and barn, esp. if it is an old barn.

I volunteer with the Iowa Barn Foundation and Iowa loses over 1000 barns per year. Soon there won't be any left.

Jones,

I dunno what tractor you have, but if a local is willing to give you $3500 and he knows that you do not know what you have, then you can bet it is worth more than what he is offering.

Also, on the car trade; in two years that Ford is going to be worth about $500. Anything that says "Deere" will do nothing but go up in value.

I think I'd pass if I were you; on both counts.

Well, that depends on what it is he wants to buy from you. By that statement. You do not even know what you are selling.. other than it is a 'small John Deere'. You first need to know what it is that you have to determine what it might be worth. You could have one nice rare jewel of a John Deere sitting there that could be worth double what he is willing to offer.

Could also be that the motor is stuck from sitting all those years or there could be other issues with it. It could also be one of thousands of John Deere's still plying the fields or in people's collections. You really need to check it out more and see if you can find a data tag on it and its true condition. I know if you can get some more information off of the tractor.. model number...serial number.. something of that nature.. people on here will render you an idea of what it might be worth.

I guess.. in reality.. what would you do with it or could you do with it and does $3,500 really sound like a fair price for it. Without some more information, we, the people who visit and post on this forum do not know what you have and therefore, cannot render or give you an appropriate answer to your question. I just hate for someone to take advantage of you. You definately do NOT want to take a car on trade. You do not know what problems might be lurking with the car or why he is so anxious to trade it for the tractor. Take cash..if you decide to sell this to him. Before you do anything..Give the people of this forum a chance to render you an idea. Find out what you really have. If this person is genuine in wanting to buy the tractor and give you at least $3,500. for it. Then he probably will be willing to wait a little bit while you determine what you have. There are alot of people who visit this site that buy/sell/collect these machines and know about what they are worth.

You might get a better discription and pictures and ask at the JD forum. You might string you prospect along by saying you havent decided because he might be offering more than its worth but I suspect he's probably offering a lot less than its worth. If somebody offered that on my equipment I would move it to a secure location.
