First off what a great site.I have 1950 8n I have done a wet and dry compression test all cylinders had a 115 pounds pressior. The smoke is white / blue color and smokes more when first started up, after running for a while it's not to bad.But when you give it a lot of gas or take off real fast it will smoke a bunch. The engine is smooth and quiet running / except a popping sound in the exhaust.A friend told me i could hold a pieace of paper at the end of the tailpipe to see if it suck it in to tell if it had a bad exhaust valve everything seems fine there.Neil my question is does it sound like a overhaul,I was hoping I could get by with a ring job. PLEASE YOUR HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED. hlwilliams@conninc.com

OHV? Might be oil going down the guides, espescially after standing, or at minimum inlet manifold pressure.

Hank, do you have a thermostat in that N? If not it may not get warm enough to burn the water vapors out of it. If it runs as good as you say I would think long and hard before I tore into it. ray

White smoke is water. After you run it at a high rpm for awhile, check the oil on the dipstick. Is it frothy? if so, you have water in your oil. My first thoughts is it is a bad head gasket, as those go pretty commonly on our 8N's. Compression check of 115 - was that dry or wet? If it was dry - you don't need rings. If the wet reading was more than say 15% or so of the dry reading, it is a good possibility a ring job is close at hand.

Hank I have always been told that Black smoke was a sign of bad gas mixture- Gray smoke is oil burning- White smoke was water. Do you have to add any water? If not is it damp in shed or does it sit a good while between starts?( in other words does it have a chance for condensation to form) good luck.
