Massey Ferguson 35, 135, 50, 65, 165

I have been looking for a good utility tractor and have narrowed in on the mf 35 or 135. I am, however, confused with the pros and cons between these two series. Other that the obvious of the 135 model being newer and more expensive.

As I have been searching, the mf 50 often catches my eye as does the 65 and 165. These tractors all seem very similar to the 35/135 models.

What my big questions is, why are there so many models that overlap in year. Are there functionality differences. Horse power differences? Size differences?

I definately wont be plowing 50 acres with it but I can see working a little bit of land, mowing, auger, and general misc. Which tractor would best be suited?

I chanced on a gas 135 and it has done everything I asked of it, hardy uses any gas at all and (mostly) very nice to work on

35 had generator, 135 either came with alternator or is probably converted to alt - my 135 has spin on oil filter, very nice to change

65 has more power, extra gear reduction at the axles and internal disc brakes - heavier tractor so is a bit harder to work on

nice things to get:
power steering
rear wheel weights
front grill protector
power adjust rims

One other question. Does the 165 have a catagory 1 or 2 3pt hitch?

The MF 65 & 165 can have either cat I or Cat II or with the available assessory ball ends, one can have BOTH I & II on the tractor by simply rotating the ball into position. Top links can be adapted with new ends or bushings.

Thanks for the input. The 165 sounds like a great tractor. All the pros of the 135 but with a little more umph.

Why is it harder to work on?

Is it more difficult to operate?

I currently own a 8n so something a little bigger would probably be great but I don't want to get in over my head.

if u get a diesel, be sure its perkins. gas, make sure its continental. 65 will do lots more & wont cost any more. be blessed

Doug: In my opinion, Massey-Ferguson made the finest small tractors ever. The 35/135 and 50/150 just cannot be beat! As a kid, I got to run the nieghbor's 35 Diesel Deluxe (3 cyl Perkins), and it simply was the most fun to operate of any tractor I've been on, and was just one tough, bull-dog strong tractor. I'm an IHC RED IRON guy, but MF red is great, too. When I grow up, I'm gonna have an MF-35 Diesel Deluxe.

I have a MF 255 which replaced the 165 which replaced the 65. These tractors are about 50 hp. You didn't say how much land you have to keep up so here's my thoughts. On the smaller tractor's I would go for the 135 with power steering even if it cost a little more than you had planned. If you go with the larger tractor such as the 165 remmeber these are larger and or not as easy to climb on and JUMP off. I am 50 years old and several years ago added an extra step to my 255 and the only mistake was not putting one on the other side. A friend and I have about 60 to 70 cows on about 120 acres with another 80 to 100 acres cut as hay so at times climbing on and off can get very old. Once your in the seat however you going to get some work done. If you just have 10 to 20 acres and just putter around get the 135 with power steering. You may want a loader someday. If you have more acreage you might wish to have the bigger tractor for more power and larger implements. Sometimes a little more is better than not hardly enough. Good luck.

I have a 135 diesel I bought used. I would not trade that tractor or sell it for anything. It will run forever and has to be the most economical tractor I own. Easily could sell it for $4500, but I couldn't find a tractor to replace it. Has to rank as my best purchase.

The two digit tractors: 35, 50 & 65 were earlier and the 135, 150 & 165 came later. The 50 and 150 were just row crop versions of the 35 & 135 and had front cultivator mount pads. Less popular tractors are the 35 special which did not have live pto, the 50 without power steering, the Standard Motors diesel 35 didn't like to start, the Perkins gas 3 cylinder converted from a diesel wasn't much fun. Fave tractors are the continental engine gas 35s with power steer and live pto, even better the 3 cylinder Perkins diesel 135. The 65 and 165 tractors with Continental gas or Perkins diesel engines are much heavier and more powerful but often cost no more than the 35 or 135 . . they ARE bigger and require larger tools: wider mowers, etc. I supose, collectively, they are still among the favorite tractors of the world.

Are any of these a 4 cylinder gas ? Used one in my early 20's at a horse stable. Manual steering. Pushed a button separate from the key to start it. Certain is was a 4 cylinder gas. In loooking at all the MF pictures in the archives have never recognized it. This was about 1980 and I think it was a 1950's machine.

Is the 35/135 about the same as a Ford 4000 tractor - ie: steering gearbox near drivers station, continental engine, etc? Thanks, Pat

Doug, "way back when", at various times, we had a 30, 35, 50, 150 and 175; all excellent tractors; not a lot of differences in their physical sizes; any of them (or others of that era) should be a good match for what you want..... .

well the 135 is 37HP gas the 50 is 32HP gas the 65 is 46HP gas and the 165 is 51HP gas. On most of them add a couple HP for diesels other then this I can not help

I have owned my MF65 gas for 25 years and use it as my everyday work tractor looking after my 16 acre hobby farm which includes about 9 acres of hay fields. I have a loader on it. I have used other tractors and I prefer the MF65 for its power and stability. You won't be disappointed if you buy a good MF65.
