I have an '02 2500 4x4 auto. I average 15mpg Around town(with a conscious effort to save fuel). From Connecticut to New Hampshire I get about 19mpg, on the way back I have gotten as high as 23mpg. It's mostly down hill on the way back. I also have a K&N conical air filter and a full 4" exhaust. I believe both contribute to fuel economy.

Hey all
I have a 1999 2500 4x4 QC,LB 4:10's and I average 20.5 to 21 on the highway keeping it around the 69-70 mark. A lot of the mileage comes from how they are driven. I pull a 28' gooseneck with mine carrying my A and or G John Deere's and still maintain 13.5 -14. I don't go by the overhead console, I compute fuel economy by odometer and fuel put in the tank. My truck has 138,860 miles on it and till looks pristine. I have been Cummins certified for 11 years and do all of my own service. I have entertained maybe looking for a newer truck, but i am so attached to this one, i will stay with it, and just add on as i need to. I nkow the trans are the weak points and it will be a matter of time befor i need to put one in, but i will do an aftermarket unit with the big billet constructed converter.

Not one reply has answered your question. My CTD is a 96 so I can't comment on mileage differences. You may yet get some intelligent responses.

got a 92 dually 2X that still gets 16 rooting around home and right at 20 empty on the road-200,000 miles-never got below 10 even when dodging weight stations. I drive it like a truck easy off the stop signs, roll the hills. wife"s 99 3/4 ton 4X4 gets 12, TWELVE mpg and thats figured from total gallons used from youngstown Oh to Mancos Co. with a empty 3 horse and back with a single horse! Dodge replaced fuel tank module and Cummins cleaned sensors and replaced turbo sensor just before the trip. kind of agree with buick and deere tho, If we hadn't bought used gas rigs penciled out cheaper

I've often found mileage reports of a person's own pet vehicle as optimistic. Parking the vehicle nose high then nose low and filling at pumps with different auto nozzle shut off limits. Some people even calculate fuel usage right off the fuel gauge than a calibrated pump meter. Rounding off numbers can be generous as well. For all we drive, trade intervals and pulling, a diesel would cost us money. The trucks own computer shows an average of 39 mph and 13mpg over the entire past year. Not bad for a 300HP 366 in a 1500HD crewcab 4x4 carrying extra accessory weight and towing. Diesel option is approx $10,000 plus lost or paid interest if borrowing. That said if I drove 40,000+ miles per year or towed a trailer 100+ miles per week a stove oil burner would pay. Have to laugh at the guys at work who claim their new diesel saves then so much $$$.Primary usage is just a round trip to work every day of 20 miles. Costs then extra over a gas every day but they can't/won't see it. Big ego with a couple of them having a diesel.

I guess Buickandeere does have a point about Diesels & ego. But I think I made a better investment in my trucks than folks paying big dollars for "Luxury" vehicles. I paid about 20 thou for my 92 Dodge/Cummins 4X4 new. It has 150K miles, & other than tires, filters, & fluids, all I have done to it was replace the waterpump. Not bad for 12 years of use. I get calls wanting to buy it on a regular basis, but i am going to keep it, hopefully it will last at least 12 more years. Back to cost, I really feel in the long run, diesels are cheaper to run. Regards, Davis

I don't believe all diesel pickup owners are ego-maniacs. I also believe diesel trucks have the potential save money. I've got one 6.2 Chevy truck that's never leaves the farm. Real handy since it runs on heating oil/farm fuel. As far as prices go, I think you've a got a point when it comes to buying new (in some cases, anyway). But, not everyone BUYS new. I've come across some great buys on diesel trucks - usually because there was some problem that scared the seller and other potential buyers. Unfortunately, deals are getting scarcer since so many people think they need diesel trucks. My 83 Chevy 6.2 powered farm truck with snow plow cost me $1800 in 1993. I've had absolutely no problems with the engine which has 135K on it presently. My 86 6.2 4WD Chevy truck cost me $950 with 75K miles on it. Now has 180K miles with no engine problems (for some reason, had new injection pump put on it before I bought it). It averages around 16 mpg but I've gotten 21 on highway trips in the summer. My 87 3/4 ton Suburban 6.2 4WD cost me $500 back in 94 and had 180K miles on it at the time and the engine had never been apart. Owner thought it had a bad rod. I put in rebuilt injectors and rebuilt the injection pump myself - total cost $330. Now has 450K miles on it, engine still has never been apart (many other repairs, though). Gets 15 regular driving and 19.5 highway. Recently bought an 85 Ford F-250 6.9 diesel with 60K original miles. 4WD, Ext. cab, 8' bed, Western plow, dual tanks, Reese 11,000 lb. hitch, 8600 lbs. GVRW. Paid $2500 for it this year. So far with winter driving the best highway mileage is 17 m.p.g. Now, if I was paying for all my maintenance and repairs, it would be a different story. Especially since so many repairs nowadays seem to be "remove and replace" and see what happens. And, buy new with a $35,000 price tag and pay $1.80 a gallon for pump diesel, I guess that truck better last a real long time with zero problems if its going to pay for itself - which, from what I hear, happens occasionally. As far as a 6000 plus lb. truck that gets 28 m.p.g. Seems to defy automotive engineering as it is known today. My wife's little Subaru wagon gets 26 m.p.g. on a good day.

2001 dually (HO, 6-speed, 4X4) get 12-14 around here, & around 18 on long trips.I have gotten up to 20 a few times. It has a 3.52 ratio, wish it was 4.10. Old rusty 92 3/4 ton (160 HP, 5-speed, 4X4) will still get 27 on long trips.

I've heard that the older cummins got better mileage than the new ones. My son hauled two tractor transmissions from Ohio to Kansas in an older Dodge dually, driving 5 mph over the limit, and got over 25 mpg. My Chevy never sees 20 mpg.

I feel like I'm living on a different planet after reading some of the responses you received in regard to fuel mileage. I know four people locally (Central New York State) that have 4WD pickups with the Cummins 5.9. The best mileage reported by any to them - empty - was 21 on a flat highway. Usual highway driving with uphill and downhill grades seems to float around 17-19 m.p.g. Friend of mine just took his year old Cummins powered pickup truck to Texas and back, and averaged 17.5 m.p.g.

I have a 91 250 that I bought new with a standard cab and manual 5 speed. I get about 22 around town and up to 28 on the road. I`ve got 121,000 on it now, so it is just now ready to put to work.

I have an '02 4x4 HO Quad with camper package and snowplow prep. I also have the 5.54 gears. Just running around home I get between 17.5 and 19, if I get out on the interstate and run all day I'll get 20.5 to 22 mpg. If your talking about the 2003 + HO's dad has one and he got around 22.5 mpg running from eastern ohio to Nashville Tenn. Not sure what gear he has but he does have the auto. Dads only got 12k on his so it should get better yet as he gets above 20-40K miles on it. Takes a long time to loosen these things up.

I've got an 01 HO and seem to get as good as or better than a lot of standard Cummins. A lot depends on how much foot you put into it! It takes more fuel to make more power, so if you work it to the max theoretically it should take more fuel.

Mine is a 2500 QC LB 4x2 w/ 63,000 miles on the clock. I get around 22 empty @ 65 mph. It drops about 1mpg every 5mph increase. I get 17 with a 2500# camper in the back @ 65mph. Typically around 15mpg pulling 10,000# trailer....worst was 13 bucking wind and rain with a 6000# enclosed trailer. 16 around town

Thanks. Alot different than my 4.11. I have a 99 F-350 diesel with about 55k on it. Best I do is 13-14 empty & around 12 towing about #14000. Generally hauling horses so always very deliberate unless the sheep brains get on the road.
