Hey- I belonged to 2 organizations that had secret handshakes and passwords too. The Boy Scouts and the local Grange. Does that mean I was in a cult?

What's secret? Pretty much everything is available online to anyone who wants to know. Even the supposed "secrets" are avaiable from the Library of Congress website. Just have to dig a little...

I think that most of us were pulling your leg about Freemasonry. I certainly was. I knew what you were talking about, and I guess a made a weak attempt at humor.

Personally, I have no interest in Freemasonry, but I have known many guys who have enjoyed it immensely.

These comments are hilarious! (unless I am crazy)
I believe this started about Masonry ( Masonic Lodges)not brick layers. Am I right? I have been in the Masonic Lodge near 30 years,32nd degree, Scottish Rite. Blue Lodge..Adobe Walls #1355,
in Texas.

I never was a Mason (though I've laid a few bricks). For a few years, I did belong to a "secret" society; secret handshake, passwords, clubhouse, regular meetings, exclusive membership (no females allowed), etc. (None of us were traveling men). Unfortunately, when I hit puberty, I found other interests..... .

I am sure you will like it. I joined after an old family friend asked me if I was interested. I had recently moved to a small rural town. I joined the lodge and it seemed if everybody in town knew me and I knew them. I gained so many friends from the lodge it is almost unbelievable. I occasionally meet brothers at tractor shows too! The lodge of course doesn't have a bar but we have some nice parties - my wife has made many friends too. Of couse it all is what you want to make out of it. A great bunch of guys! I was a cement mason(finisher) for about 20 yrs, also worked with brick masons early on. I can tell you 2 things about cement masons, stone masons and brick masons;
1) the $ is pretty good, if you work hard at your trade
2) there isn't anything easy in these trades, it's all bullwork!!!

There is a pub down the road a ways, called 'The Bricklayer's Arms' or something like that. You might find some there, and ask them yourself.

Not sure of your question but I like masonary work. I hack at it for some flower boxes and mail boxes.

I had my new home completed bricked, had a stone mason come in and do a fire place, had tile floor put down and tile put around some LP fireplaces.
As you can tell I like masonary work of many different flavors.

Whenever www.fotki.com comes back on-line query for ShepFL and you can see some of the masonary work that was done.

I, too, am speculative, as you put it. Knocking off bits of stone to prepare it for building, is not my idea of a pastime. Setting out levels and keeping the corners square can be sort of difficult too. Regards, RAB

My Son worked as a laborer for a very busy masonry co. around home for nine-ten months last year. He made GREAT $$$$ per hour, and the materials were VERY expensive on the $250K to $500K houses He was working on. Needless to say His crew did Great work or the bricks got tore down & replaced. Their company charged about $1.00 per square foot of covered area JUST for installation, or about 35 cents per brick, but not including the cost of the brick or mortar.

I always thought that working with bricks and blocks and mortar and such might be an interesting career...don't think I'd wanna be a free mason, 'cause I could always use a paycheck...and how would ya pay for materials if you gave it all away?

Hey 42,

I recently built an addition onto my house that included a family room with fireplace. I had a brick mason build the chimney using beautiful "old-fashioned" bricks. I think that he did a good job and that the masonry products are long lasting and attractive. I like masons and masonry.
