Why do you guys use new trucks to haul your old tractors?? I have a 65 ford and a 69 chev that I'm going to be fixing up to pull/haul my old tractors. I think if you haul an old tractor you should use an old truck, but I do like old things. I hope I haven't opened a hornets nest here just asking a dumb question. Figure if you fix old tractors you should also use an old truck

I have a customer that drives a early 1960's Autocar semi tractor with a drop deck. He travels from the east coast to the midwest a couple times a year to buy old iron. Always leaves with a load!

I hope this works this time. You mean like this? This was this last year when I went to get my "new" wd45 with my 1967 F100. 84 years of experienced horsepower on the road. I actually passed a clasic car show on the way home. My new truck should handle the 20' trailer much better now. That was a memorable trip.

First let me state that I use an older truck to pull my tractors,81 Chevy,1 ton,4x4.Now I would like to upgrade to a newer truck,the reason being is better fuel milage and less worry about repairs when I'm a couple hundred miles from home.I get 8 miles per gallon with the 81 and my friend get 16-18 with his new ton dually.Cost me nearly 100 dollars to go to a show that cost him less than 60 dollars.Now that limits the number of shows I can go to and enjoy.After all isn't that the whole idea,to enjoy the shows,tractors,and friends?

Sell an 81 truck for a new dually because you can't afford the gas? Gas/truck payment..whats the diffrence? $40000 for a 40 percent increase in fuel economy? That money should keep you in tractor show gas for a good many years.

Yea, that is kinda what I've been thinking but a newer truck would be nice.I'll probably keep the old 81 for a few more years.It still pulls two tractors rather well and it is payed for.

After reading all of the posts below I have only one thing to add, most of those older trucks were not capable of meeting the speed demanded by todays interstate highways.

Demanded? I guess I don't understand what you are trying to say. When I bought my '50 Ford F-6, I couldn't get the rear end into high range, nor did the speedometer work. My wife was following me in my F-150 and we headed out down I-5 thru Redmond and Bellevue, WA. I stayed in the right lane, but kept up for the most part. When I got home I asked my wife what my speed was. She told me I was around 55 most of the way and got up to 60 at times. Recall this was with the rear end in low range. I don't know what interstates you drive, but 55-60 should meet all legal requirements. I believe the only posted minimum I've ever seen has been 45.

Since the speed limit is 70, everybody wants to run at 80. I drive about 55 to 60 and get tailgated for a few miles before the jack-asses figure out that the left lane is open, so they can pass.

That's what I figure, there's more than one lane, there isn't a huge problem with not keeping up with the dweebs in their Mercedes or for that matter their Cummins Ram dually crewcab. They might have a problem with it, I don't.

Have a 51 Ford F-6 with flathead V8 to be restored one day for hauling antiques. Have some stationary engines bolted on a flatbed of a 51 IH L-120 w/61,000 original miles...

That was my intention when I bought this '50 Ford F-6. I'm in the process of "restoring" it (it has a 292 Y-block and I'm not changing back to the flathead). Don't know if it will ever haul a tractor or not, but I will at least take it to the Shelton, WA truck show some day.

When I got my first old tractor I thought I used my '69 Dodge to take the tractors to local shows. Been usein a GMC thats 30 years younger!

The old truck is just sittin. Need to put on a new hitch, will see maybe if this is a good year for business I'll put the old girl to work! :)

You could buy an older semi tractor and drop deck trailer for a lot less money than a new pickup and trailer. Then use it as one of your restoration projects. I have seen some beautifully redone Kenworth and Peterbilt conventional tractors from the 70's and early 80's. Now there's something that would really be impressive when you show up at a tractor show with a rig like that with 4 or 5 antique tractors on it.

Right now I'm not I blew number 2 cylinder out of it a couple years ago and haven't been able to find one to put back in, but when I was driveing it it cost around $1000 a year to insure and thats as a dump truck. If I took the bed off and put it back as a road tractor it would beless then that. Or at least it would have been a couple years ago

Your 1963 Diamond-T would be great. You would probably have as many people looking at the truck as looking at the tractors. I know a gentleman that uses 1948 Peterbilt for a wrecker. It looks like it is brand new.

The others covered it well, I keep a fairly new 4wd pickup to use for farm and snowplowing business, keeping plates and insurance on an old truck for occaisional use doesnt make much sense , I can buy a decent 2 axle trailer cheaper than plates and ins.cost for one year on an old truck,then theres finding a decnt one,. Up here in Upstate NY they are usually pretty well rusted out unless not used in winter.

I always thought it would be real neat to restore an old truck and paint it like a dealers truck to haul my MM's to the shows with.Unfortunately I live in Illinois where the salt man really pours it on and the old trucks are usually too far gone for a person with no bodyworking skills to bring them back.

I drag my MM's around with a '69 GMC 1 ton. Its somewhat of a restoration project itself, cost only $325 when I bought it and this year it only looks like it will cost about $500 to insure and tag it. Sure, its top speed is about 45 mph and its ugly as sin with the mismatched door and hood, but at shows here, they make you park outside the show grounds anyhow.

I am in the very early stages of restoring a 1939 Dodge 1 1/2 ton truck. My grandfather purchased the truck brand new and I am only the second person to which it has been titled. Unfortunately the engine has been changed so I cannot mactch the numbers but I do plan on rebuilding the flathead 6 that is in it to keep it as original as possible. I plan on pulling my tractor(s) to parades and pulls with this truck when I have completed it.

It also varies a lot as to 'why' we are here. Some folks are like me, I use older tractors b/c that is what cash flows in my farm business. I use newer trucks b/c vehicles are made to last reliably a finite amount of time. I wouldn't know one end of a tractor show from another, strickly trying to keep the best stuff I can afford running as cheaply as I can for as long as I can and maybe get some tips on how to fix something for a job that's in the shop..

I just havent found the truck Im looking for yet!I am looking for the truck my garndfather drove t odeliver tractors with.he worked for the local,GULP,Deere dealer from 38-until his death in 52.My father was very young when he died,and cant remember what happened to it,but i have had a few leads here and there!

Unfortunately, where I'm at this is not a poor mans hobby. Matter of fact you don't "fit-in" if your not in the latest truck and biggest rv. It should't be that way but it sures feels that way. I like the old trucks too and wish I had the time and $ to make a nice hauler. Thanks

How do you get power to both rear ends on that 250 I'd love to do that to a chev I have if I ever get back to it that is, as it is now I plan to put a twin stick shifter in it since I have an Aux transmission from a big gas burner that way I can get over drive and a lot of extra low hole power also. But if I could add another rear end it would even be better, Ihave rear ends from big trucks but they are way to big and they have air brakes on them also. So how did you do it please enlighten us
