This message will probably not even get posted - I just wanted to let people know that someone tried to run a scam on me through my ad on this website. I understand that this website has alot of warnings re any business dealings here. I just wanted to put out a heads up to anyone selling a tractor here.

Crystal,

Just wondering why you said that your ad wouldn't get posted?? I assume you're not blaming the good folks that maintain this site are you? Hope that's not the case. Anyone trying to scam you or others won't be connected to this site--instead they're a bunch of worldwide predators looking for victims. I too was contacted by one, but I played along with him long enough to receive his bogus check--no harm done to me. Cost him overnight shipping fees and a lot of agravation trying to convince me to send him the "overpayment amount". Your warning is fine and I'm sure it's welcome by all legitimate users of this site--just thought I detected some misdirected hostility. Maybe I misread your comment about your ad not getting posted??

Kevin -- Just wondering if the check was good? Just got a Mike Douglas from the Netherlands offering a pile of money for something we posted in the ads today. He claims that his "guy" will send a cashier's check for about $4000 more than our price and then we send his overpayment back. What are these guys gaining from this?????

The letter below explains how the scam works. I publish it it its entirety because I deny that the writer has any expectation of privacy when he tries to scam me. Why does he feel that he can trust a complete stranger with an extra five thousand dollars? Why doesn't he offer to send me the correct amount and the remainder to his "agent"? Why not send it all the the agent, and let the agent bring me the correct amount? These are some of the clues to SCAM. I have not responded, even though he left the door open for me to charge him the entire $5120 for "transferring charges."

Here is the e-mail that I received:

Hello Walt
Thanks very much for the reply and God bless.Since the machine is in good condition i will buy it now.You should not worry about the shipping to England i will handle that. Well, not to waste time becos i need it i quite agreed to pay the $3000 for it

But this is how we are going to seal the
transaction becos of delays and fastness. There is one
of my assosiates in the United states , who is oweing
me the sum of $8120 and he will send a cashier check or Money Order of the total money oweing
me to you and you will deduct the total cost of the
item + transfering charges and send the balance to my shipping company who is coming for the pickup in your location via western union Money transfer . The
reason why i am doing this is because a check sent within
America especially Money Order
clears almost immediately. Concerning the shipping my shipping
firm is coming for the pick up after
the payment .But the only thing is
for you to send the balance so as to pay them for the
pick up.. So if this offer is okay by you send me your
contact information(name and address) to which my
assosiate will address
the check to .. so that
everything will be ready in time.. Thanks once again as i await your response.Greetings to your family.kindly send your phone no for easy communication. . Regards Felix

Thanks! It all sounds good until I ,as the seller, has to make the money transfer back to the buyer. That is when I decided that it was just some type of scam. I have figured out that if I send money back to this guy that the US dollar would give him more pounds which is good for him. Anyways, I appreciate your info and time!

BTS, If you have to ask, you haven't been paying attention. What they gain is the money you send them. What you gain is a big hole in your bank account.

I never said I was sending them their money, all I wanted to know is if Kevin tried cashing the check he received and whether or not it was good. I don't exactly understand how they gain money from this transaction if they are the ones sending the money in the first place. If you cash their cashier's check and don't send them any thing back, what and how are they gaining? They only get their money back if people are falling for it. If anyone else cares, the best way to handle most overseas deals is to have them wire money into your bank account. Once the bank confirms that the money has been received then proceed with the shipping. It's not that hard to figure out!!

You are right Kevin, you did misread what I said. I said that my 'message' might not be posted - not my 'ad' I said that because the rules are very specific about what kind of messages could be posted in the forum and I was not 100% sure that my 'post' would be accepted. I don't read any hostility in my post - I was just giving a heads up to others. Maybe you were entertained by this scam - I don't have the time for that kind of entertainment. Thank you for responding to my post. Since this particular scam is so common that you knew what it was without me even mentioning it, maybe the 'good folks' on this sight could post a warning about it, so others could have a choice as to whether they wanted to invest the time in a little 'internet game'
