My L-800 Ford grain truck has a 391 gas that's getting tired. I also have an '86 F-250 with the 6.9L IH diesel which is getting the Michigan "you can see out of the cab, and I don't mean through the windows" syndrome. Has anyone out there attempted a similar swap? Does that 6.9 have an S.A.E. bell housing etc.?

Thanks for the replys. The 6.9 was used in IH trucks up what used to be called "2 ton" like their "S" series, thats why I thought to use it. A realy good day gets 4-6 mpg with the gasser. I'll check into a rebuild but it'll probably be cost prohibitive.

THE 391 IS A HD 390,BEEFIER BLOCK,CRANK SNOUT,HARMONIC BALLANCER. THE (FE) FAMILY 332/352/[360/361]/370/390/391/427 OH YEAH. AT LEAST THE HI RISER;TUNNEL PORT AND THE TORQUE MONSTER DETUNED 428.
I WOULD REBUILD THE 391.
.30 OVER,REWORKED HEADS,HEADERS,UPGRADE TO MSD IGNITION ,GAP LESS SECONDARY RINGS ,NICE VAC SEC CARB WITH A DECENT INTAKE AND MATCHED CAM ,YOU WILL NOT BELEAVE THE (TORQUE) THESE ENGINES WERE DESIGNED FOR INDUSTRAIL APPS,LIKE THE 300CID 6CYL THEY WILL TAKE THE PUNISHMENT NOTING PROPER MAINT LIKE ANYTHING ELSE.

I think I would rebuild the 391 gas also.

Ford used the 6.9L in one ton and smaller trucks. I can not ever remember it in any larger trucks. For the 600 - 800's they used the V-8 Cat or simular. While I do not know the exact reasons, (power; durabilty) I think if the 6.9L would stand up in a 800; Ford would have used it as they owned the IH motor but had to buy Cat and others.

My 2 cents
John

the 6.9 was put in the 3/4 & 1 tons and did a good job, but if it was mine I would rebuild the 391.

The 6.9 was used in IH trucks, a parts yard would have the parts for a 4 or 5spd. trans bellhousing.
