Super Dave My father told me of geting water out of motor oil and hyd. oil with some cleaning the oil for reuse as in 1930 and in WWII oil was hard to buy for him . He use 8" pipe 5' long with cap on it with niple on cap end with shutoff valve pipe was mounted on wall verticle with valve end down . Befor draining oil he stuff clean rags in bottom 10'' of pipe close valve on bottom of pipe pour oil in top of pipe . A light bulb was placed under valve , oil that was cleaned by the rags , drop on light bulb drop at a time . The heat of bulb evaporate the water and clean oil with no water was drop into and stored in to a clean 5 Gal bucket to be resused in motor of vehicle next oil changing time . NOTE I will not use this old way due to posible big oil fire with light bulb starting it!!! Cheaper to buy good oil than replace your home but it interesting how people got by with no money in the 1930 and with shortage in war time. Snowey

Purchasing new oil is a lot cheaper than trying to reuse that old oil. Its a lot cheaper than an overhaul. Good clean oil is the most important with routine changing along with the filter. I owned a IH 460 diesel a few years ago and we had to change the oil in the gear case every fall before it got cold or when it got to -20 it would freeze solid and you couldn't move the tractor. This was strictly due to condensation. When that oil froze it also ruined the filter so that if you did get it thawed and ran the tractor, you simply sucked the paper filter into the oil which further contaminated the oil. You can filter all you want with a cotton rage or whatever you want but the best solution is new oil.

Hi Steve,

I let some used hydraulic oil set for about a year one time and it really seperated it's self. Water and trash on the bottom. I poured it thru a filter and it came out really clean with very little in the filter media.

One other poster(?) set up a cleaning container, 1-5gal pail above the other one with a piece of cotton rope between them. He stated the used motor oil came out clean enough to use for secondary oiling.

If you let it sit it will get to the point where most of the water will be on the bottom but not all of it. I know you don't want to here this but you need to change it and run it and then do it again to get most of it out.
