I am in need of a 30 - 40 horsepower tractor for tilling work. I need it to be diesel, and am looking for something in the 60's or 70's. Any suggestions for this machine? I would like a full size tractor (not compact) but yet I have a son who will be able to drive in the future (he currently drives compact diesels).

Thanks,
Bill

My Ford 3000 and Cockshutt 550 provide a lot of power for their size and fuel consumption.
The Ford is a lower profile and maybe a bit handier for a youngster.

Bill, Here in the Kansas City area you can get a 60-70 HP tractor for the same money (or less) that a 30-40 HP tractor. City transplants buying this size of a tractor has made these very high priced. When a 8N or 9N brings the same money as a 560 Farmall?? Get a bigger tractor, you'll be glad that you did.

Yes Mark city transplants did raise the demand on smaller utility tractors. However I also see it as a sign/symptom of the breakups of many farms into smaller plots, requiring not so large of a tractor. Of course the older smaller Fords and Farmalls are a definite collector thing.

Ben, You are correct. As a rule the bigger the tractor the cheaper per HP. In this part of the country a Ford 5000 can be as high or higher in price than a Ford 7700 with cab and air. Fewer demands for larger tractors that there are for the smaller ones I guess.

I agree with the ford 3000 or 3600. I am a Deere man, but Deere cant compete in the small category. The 3600 is around 42 hp. They are very easy on fuel, have 3 point, eight gears, and a two stage clutch (almost like live pto) I have had the privilege to operate a 3600 during hay season. It is great for raking, fluffing, or even cutting with the 7 foot disc mower. The ride is the only thing on the ford that leaves something to be desired, but they are by far the best small tractor in my mind.

Mail order tractor supply houses can fix you up with a shock absorber seat with back and arm rests for about $90 bucks. Bolts to your tractor with 2 bolts right where the original bolted up. You can set the tension for the kind of ride you want and how much you weigh. I weigh 250 and get an excellent ride. Looks good too and comes in several colors.

It is hard to beat a Ford 3000 or a Massey Ferguson 35, 135 or 50. The MF will sell for a lower price than the Ford, but will do the job just the same. Lots of parts and support for both.

I have a MF 65 and love it, so I would say you cant go wrong with a MF35 or the newer 135. Might want to stay with the 4x2 trans. Mines a gas version and personally I like it better then a deisel for how I use it.

I would recommend a Ford 3000 or 4000 from '65 or newer. The 8 speed trans will get you a good rototoller speed. The 3000 is about 36-38 hp and the 4000 is 52hp. I've never owned a 3000, but know of a lot of them, all real good. I have owned a 67 4000, put 7500 hrs on it, all hard, and never had any trouble with it.

Hey Bill,
If you want a good size tractor to till with and a slow speed to do it, let me suggest a Massey 135. I have one that has a real good slow first gear, perfect for tilling. Mine is a gas model but you can find diesels around. Just have to keep an eye out for one.

I have full size tractors now but have had a compact Allis Chalmers 18 hp diesel. It had 3
speed ranges with a 4 sp xismn (12 total) and in
the low range it really crept. Had it 4 years
and never had a mech/elect/fuel/rubber problem. Problem with it was that there was no iron in it and it was too light to hang in there when working implements. The implements pushed it all over the place even with front end weight.

I now have 60 vintage Fords, 2000D 3000D and 4000.
The 3000 is the only one with a dual range transmission so I get 8 speeds out of 4 gears. It has live PTO and has enough weight to be a force with which to recon. It is a real tugger and sips diesel. I had to overhaul it (not it's fault) and since it is the perfect all around tractor.

Low range 1st is pretty slow and should run a 5 to 6' tiller quite well. The 4 speeds are too fast even though the other tractors are great workers
too.

The Massey Ferguson 35 Deluxe is nice with 2 x 4 also but mine was gas. Don't know if you can get it in Diesel.

For a tractor that small, diesel is no big deal. Diesel is your friend when you want to do serious work and make a living i.e. plow a couple hundred acres or so and want fuel efficiency. When they work, they are less fussy than gas but when they break, they like the $$$$$.

Hope this helps.

One last thing. I attempted to buy a tiller one time and the guy in the back (not salesman) said not to buy one without gauge wheels to controll tillage depth.

Best little diesel tractor to run a rototiller would be an IH Hydro 84 utility. It's more like 50-55 HP, and is a little newer than the vintage You mentioned but would be GREAT on a tiller. And probably half the $$$$ of a new 30 HP compact.

That's good - they don't go slow enough.

You need a slow 1st gear, live pto would be nice. With the diesel requirement, narrows your choices quite a bit.
