MOORHEAD, MINN. -- Authorities have released the name of a rural Moorhead man killed in an accident while plowing snow.

Milton Hoag, 74, was using a small tractor to move snow from the driveway of his home when he got caught in the loader's bucket mechanism.

He was dead at the scene.

A family member discovered the accident. It was reported around 11 a.m. Monday.

Actually, it was closer to Lancaster, Ohio. The guy was my neighbor. A few years back, he got his foot caught in an augar and was stuck there all night. This was right beside his parents house. The guys reading the gas meter found him the next morning. If memory serves, he lost part of his foot in that accident. You can read the article about the accident Monday here: http://www.lancastereaglegazette.com/news/stories/20040127/localnews/300794.html

My neighbor died this way about 20 years ago, and another neighbor a similar way about 10 years ago, They have better safety features now but you have to respect them.

It happened on a skid-steer loader, not sure what model series. Got is head caught inbetween the loader bucket arms and the cab. Sad story.

That would be hard to do wearing the safety belt that is standard on skid loaders. The best safety device ever used is between the ears. We all get in a hurry and take chances, regrettably we all don't get away with it every time.

Respect for your equipment and safety first but what is under the snow can not be seen. I was doing a charitable act on Monday, was on my second farm yard clean for single woman when I thought I would make one more pass down the driveway to make it just a little wider. I run a NH665 with cab/heater and an 8 ft. articulating blade. Well, I slipped off of that driveway and dropped down a good 5 ft. up against a cattle panel fence with the post stuck between the two right wheels. Nice, can't move, horses on the other side of the fence, can't take the staples off of the panel and skid around, nobody here to watch the horses. Hey, the neighbor has a JD 2955 with front wheel assist. I was back moving snow in less that thirty minutes. If that gentleman was killed running a skid steer without a cage, somebody should have given him a good kick and he would still be with us. At the present time, if you trade a skid steer off without a cage, the dealer who traded you needs to install a cage before he can sell that skid steer, its the law. So, the dealers won't give you anything for those old skid steer, you can purchase them cheaply, privately. How cheap do you want to be to save your life?
