I have to jump start my tractor as the battery is weak. I was told if the battery has 3 water caps it has a six volt system and if it has six caps or no caps it has a 12 volt system. is this true?
Also is it safe to jump start it with my car if the tractor has a six volt system?
i hooked up the negative connections od the car and tractor and then put the positive connection onto the body of the tractor and positive terminal of the car.
It tried turning over but the cable attached to the tractor body was smoking. It is about 10 below outside so I don't know if that may be the cause of the smoke but I stopped just to be safe.
I jump started it lasr weekend with no problem but I didn't know about a six volt VS 12 volt difference i nth system.

Another Problem is we have snow on the ground and I was clearing the driveway. I dumped the bucket and tried backing out but the rear tires just spin on ice. The tires are not sinking into the ground, I don't have tire chains and the bucket is not hydrolic. What can I do to get it to grab?
Will putting sand under the rear tires help or will I nd up having to get a tow to get out?

Watch out for exploding batteries! Even with a 6 volt/pos ground system always connect pos-pos, and neg to neg. It is preferable to make the last connection at the 12v charging battery ground. I usually connect the postive cable to the starter mounting bolt, and the negative to the 6 volt battery terminal.

To get your tractor out, get a 5 ton come - along (hand winch) chain it to a tree and have someone work the winch while you back the tractor at idle speed.....

My sugestion would be to change it over to 12volts. You will have a lot better cranking power. If you dont want to do that, get an 8volt battery, one with 4 caps on top.

yes, putting sand under the tires will help, so will ashes from your stove. Tire chains are very desirable. Jump starting needs good cables if your tractor battery is down. most of the ones you buy the wire is way too light. some guys will tell you thant you can't safly start a 6volt by jumping but I disagree. Sounds like you are doing it the right way. You are getting smoke/heat because the connection is bad or the wire is too light. At 10 below a fully charged battery is only a fraction of it's warmer self. It sounds like you need to invest in a new battery. Is your tractor running on magneto or distributer? If it is Mag you can put in a 12 volt battery with no changes. Your generator won't charge it but it sounds like maybe it is not doing that anyway.

Even if you run a distributor ignition you can run on a battery for quite a while. We run a 4 cylinder continal engine on a cordwood saw/log splitter for several days at a time and it doesn't have a generator. Have seen several different tractors run this way too. You just need to charge the battery once in a while. If it is very cold I would chage it each 6 to 12 hours, if a magneto, well maybe doulble that as you only use the battery for starting. If you ae running a mag and no generator you can just put a 12 volt battery in, and you will like how fast it turns over. If you are running a distrubutor you should put a resistor in the wire to the coil to reduce the voltage to about 9 volts. You can get these,I think still, cars used to use them. On the other hand it takes a longtime to burn the points with 12 volts, too. Maybe because of not having a generator in the system the voltage isn't as high.

One way to tell the difference is does the coil wire in the center of the cap go to a round coil, the distributor is also round. A mag has a square coil mounted to the top of it . The distributor is pointing down the Mag is pointing toward front of tractor. I can understand how the younger generation don't know what a Mag looks like ,as when I was young I can't recall seeing a tractor with a Distributor on it.

Please explain what you are talking about when you sya the mag is pointing to the front and distributor pointing down.On my M with a distributo, the wires are "facing" the back of the tractor and the one with a mag is the same way!

49 Since you brought it to my attention you are right, it just goes to show that I grew up with Magneto and unfamilar with using the distributor on the letter series Farmalls.
