Why is it that it's not uncommon to see ads for used Allis Chambers, Allis Chamblers, Alice Chalmers tractors? At least I haven't seen Massive Fergusons for sale in awhile.

I guess what concerns me is that, even if they're not sure about the actual spelling, the owners could at least look at the hood decals and get it right (assuming the decals are still there). I like the older Farmalls and Deeres...never seen anybody misspell A, B, C, H, M, or G yet!

A nice old guy I talk to in our village used to work for an agricultural machinery dealership. One of his favourite stories was about the time they had just employed a new secretary, and his boss asked her to 'write a letter, to Allis Chalmers'. when it came to him to read the proof, she had begun the letter-: "Dear Mrs. Chalmers"

I went to a barber for many years who had a mania for fixing up old tractors. I couldn't count the number of times he told me that "Allis Chambers are the best". I never bothered to correct him. Did I help to get all this started?

Yes I like A/C tractors we have had them for years as well as many other brands. I wouldnt really call any of them junk as all old tractors are great in my book, and in my experiences all of them have good and bad points. Sooner or later they all break down, and they all rust the same, so what makes one junk when they all have the potential to be junk? I work on the neighbors 8n ford at least twice a month but I don't call it a pile of junk.

My experience with acs is the 7000, series, 7050, 7080 had plenty of power, just couln't keep them together, plus there was no room for your girlfriend to sit beside you, narrowest cab made, my dad once went to a rollover test, only guy that got hurt was the guy in the AC, just about killed him.

In that particular sentence you referred to, it should be "they're" (as in "they are"), but certainly not "their" as in "their tractor". Just who was that teacher that you learned that from? A guy has to be careful these days when you correct someone, a lot of weirdos like me around who correct the correctors.

I threw the they're in there, thanks for the correction, school has been a long time ago. I just figured If the guy was going to bash my tractors he could use the correct word, and earn his smartguy name.

speak of the devil - there is a question in the MF forum about about a "massey furguson". Must be a "hairy" problem!

It is fun to read some of the stuff on the 'net - makes you wonder if some people's first language was Wolf or something.

To be charitable about it, maybe people are just so relaxed that they don't pay much attention to spelling.
