Tell your son to ask this mechanical genius of a Cat mechanic how the same crank used in the late 4020 manages to stand up to 200+ horsepower in turned up 4840s. Early 4840 engines and late 4020 engines used the same part number crank, as did a few dozen other Deere engines at over 110 horspower. No disrespect intended toward Cat mechanics, because I was one for three years, but this guy clearly has no clue, and is likely repeating hearsay.

What kind of a crank does a 4630 have? Isn't it the same as a 4020 crank? Am I right on this or not? I know the 4630 powershifts broke the flywheel bolts if they were turned up to 200 horses because they had a four bolt flywheel, which was the same as a 4020 I believe.

The 4630 does use the same crank as the late 4020, but they have 6 flywheel bolts, not four. When installing a six-bolt crank with a four-bolt flywheel, the remaining two holes are plugged with 1/2 plugs.

I have a 1972 J.D. 4000, all stock, pump set up, only 3200 hours. Tested at two different times on two different dynos at over 140 hp.

The only broken 4020 cranks I ever heard of were gassers. They liked to break crankshafts when worked hard.

Do you want me to send you a picture of one. I have 2 4020's here in the yard that broke cranks. I still have one of the cranks if you want a picture. It is a very common problem of the 4020 diesel to break cranks in the # 5 throw. The reason that they break is because the block lacks support in the oil pump area and the line bore of the block gets off.

Now I remember why the name rang a bell to me--I saw the tractor pull at Vandalia, Missouri. Vandalia is a short distance from Mexico.

This was back in the days before automatic sleds, so they had two more people step onto and add their weight to the sled every few feet. Very dangerous.

The thing I remember most about the Sydenstrickers was the pretty daughter they had that was about my age. WOW!

Mike WJ. 100% right about Van's Cajuan Queen knew Van pretty well. Threw weights for him a couple times. Van's first good puller was a 4010. Think he sold it to Dave Williams They both kicked butt at the Iowa State Fair for years.

Back in the 70s I worked for a John Deere dealer. I never saw a 4020, new or used, that would not easily exceed 100 HP, and in totally stock form at that. I have never heard of one breaking a crank.

The 4020 my dad bought new in 1970 was 104 HP, in factory tune. We had it turned up to 110. Many 4020's had turbo's installed over the years. I never heard of ANY of them breaking cranks. Some were jacked up to 135+ HP. The "weak link" was the oiling system, and the cooling system. Most "turbo-ed" 4020's I saw fail, ended up burning up the #6 piston. I still own dad's old 4020. It's tuned down to it's intended 96 hp. With over 9000 hours, it's still running the original (but somewhat worn out) engine. It's had a complete overhaul at 5000 hours. Still the best loader tractor I've ever ran. John
