I read Big Dean's advice to Bob B posted on Jan. 29/02 in reply to "Axle Seals". I ate it up but need more. My axles and shims were mixed up on the way to the machine shop on my MF35 gas tractor. I guessed and reassembled it the best way I knew how. Now the opposite axle turns the same way when turning the other axle. I do not hear the inner ends of the axles bumping against one another. Do I shift around the original shims that I started with from one side to another or get more shims?

One MF service manager said I might have to take off the top with the lift arms on and look down into the differential to see the problem. Is this difficult to remove the top and how is it done or ??? Should I can that notion and do the shim shuffle? My tractor is on blocks and wheels are off.

Thanks,
Little Mike, the mechanical idiot who tries

The preload on the axle bearings is determined by how tight the two axle shafts butt together in the center. Changing sides with the shims will not change how much preload your bearings have. If they are to tight you will have to add a shim or shims on one side or the other preferably the side with the least shims. There will probably be some disagreement on this but with both wheels off I would put the transmission in gear if you can turn the axle by hand it will run as is and be fine. If not add shims till it will with no end play in the axle shaft. I have set many this way some as long ago as 20 years & they are still running.

I would try more shims or shuffle the ones you have even a few thousandths should be all that is needed to take top cover off is quite a bit of work why do more than you have to?
