Is it just me or is the stuff on Ebay really expensive? I have seen identical items sell at local auctions for much less. Or those items were properly recognized as junk. Especially if shipping is considered, there are few "bargains" on Ebay? My 2c Irv

I just can't get to excited about Ebay. Seen adds for people trying to buy Ebay accounts with good feedback - wonder what's going to happen there? An unwary person can get taken at a live auction - let alone when dealing with people you don't know and product you can't see or touch.

I know there are a lot of satisfied people out there but there is just to many opportunities for the unscrupulous to take advantage of the system.

I love EBay I find all kinds of things I would like to buy if I had the money. I also buy a lot of not normal stuff for my projects. I have saved tons of money on different things I have needed. In one area there are things common and not in others so eBay allows you to find these things. I also sell stuff on eBay. I have sold over 1,200 items in the last 3+ years with no negitives. I also go out of my way not to rip someone off with hidden costs in shipping and such. Mark H.

I like the ones that have a set price for shipping and when you get the parcel, the postage was about ten times less. I guess the rest was for the envelope/box etc.

I agree. I've gone looking for current production toy tractors and found e-bay selling prices to be 10-20% higher than what I would pay at many online stores. On the other hand, it is often the place to find things you can't find anywhere else. Of course, some items are so rare you can't find them even on E-bay.

I really enjoy Ebay. There are some bargains, but the old adage "patience is a virtue" is very true.
If you need something NOW, forget it.

The shipping costs are often more than the item selling price.

What I do especially like as a canning jar collector, is that I can get brands of jars that were never normally in my part of the country. Some brands I had never even heard of outside of collector books until I started using Ebay.

I also am finding that summer time is when you should be looking. Towards fall more people are inside and bidding. Of course there are also more items listed.

If you are not careful the fine print will also get you. You have to read between the lines very carefully.

In my opinion, eBay has become the "great equalizer" in regard to prices. What I used to consider "rare" has become commonplace, and vice versa with what I normally consider "junk" at times. Also, it has become the standard by which some people value their own merchandise (myself included). Last Saturday at a local auction, I purchased a group of items (non tractor related) for $85. After checking eBay's past sales history on them, they turned out to be worth $1500+ if I wanted to take the time to list them, pack them and ship them. Instead, I'll price them at a fraction of that, and let someone else do the heavy eBay work.
On the other hand, live auctions can be the worst place to try to buy "bargains". Two things that come to mind are, "Golden Rod Fence Stretchers" and "Hi-Lift Jacks"; both of these items always seem to bring within $2 of new price, regardless of condition!
The internet has added just another facet to the world of merchandising. It's up to the "old fuddy duddies" (like myself) to adapt or sit by the side of the road and wonder what happened!

My thinking is that some of the bids look fishy. In one case 3 bids by one person? Who are they bidding against?( no one else bidding!) It seems to me they can run up the price. I wonder how many of these auctions are successful? Live auctions I go to have a limited ability to run you up. And of course the shipping for a lot of our stuff is high - old iron lol! Irv

The item could of has a reserve bid and the person put in a max amount but started at a lower amount. The Ebay computerts will raise the bid by what the incriment is , thuse could be three bids etc.

Thats proxy bidding Irv, I set my high price and you keep comming with a better bid until you beat me or I have a set high price I will pay and every time you bid my bid goes up automatically to my next highest price, until you beat me that is, then it will show all bids.

No doubt about some things at local auctions being totally out of line. This past weekend there were some bargains at a local sale, 7600 Ford for under $5000 and some rip offs; Shaver post driver (that was worn out) brought $2500, brand new is $2250.

I noticed that about JD loaders. Around here they sell one 30 yrs old (when you can find em) with worn out hydraulics for the same price as a new one (Koyker) which seems to be better built...plus the new one has the fast load feature....have you ever tried to load a 4 point bucket on a FE loader, alone?

Irv,

I've been using ebay since forever.

Two things I have found:

1. Once you find what you are looking for and at the price you are willing to pay, do not bid against yourself. It makes no sense.

2. Check out that seller's feedback rating very carefully.

Hi Bob,

If you bid, then someone else comes in and bids, then you have to bid again to stay in the race. In effect, you are bidding against yourself (or, same as bidding against your "upped" earlier bid).

If the price is right, I bid one time, 20 seconds before the end of the auction. That way, at that late hour, if someone else comes in, I am bidding solely against him and not one of my earlier bids.

Later,

Allan

I guess what I mean is: Why should I help inflate the final price if I know that there is a good chance that I'll be buying the item?

It makes no sense to play the "I'll pay more" game for 7 to 10 days.

I think what you're trying to say is that you're a sniper! That's OK by me,'cause that's what I do, too! The heck of it is, the last couple of auctions I've sniped on at the last minute, the competition had deeper pockets than me!!!

Irv: An auction is an auction is an auction, poor place to go looking for a particular item. They are just a good spot to find bargains. The art of bidding is also very important. If you make a blunder on bidding you may as well walk away as there is someone prepared to run you as far as you will go. Then again it is quite interesting to stick these guys at their own game.

Hugh,
Do you mean if someone sees that someone else keeps moving to the top of an item (cause they want it)they will just hit it for the heck of it to drive you up (like being the south end of a north bound donkey)?

I only purchased from ebay once (new to the game) and I noticed that if I came right back on an item it mysteriously upped again. But If just sat and ran the clock out, the price only moved once. Course at the last minute I bought it at about 1/3 the cost of a new one and this thing (a winch) hadn't been used.

Mark: Exactly, the faster you come back the more they will stick it to you. The other thing at live auctions never hang around and item you are interested in looking it over. Look it over good and move to the next item look it over well. Than skip a few and look over all kinds of otems in great detail even though may not care a hoot about them. These auctioneering firms are constantly monitering people. Same on e bay they know how many times you look, so look at all kinds of items.

There was a guy on here a few weeks back, finally found his grandfathers tractor being listed in an auction. He phoned the auction company at least a half dozen different days preceeding the auction. He went to auction, parked himself in front of the old tractor, told everyone who came in sight his great tale of how he tracked down this tractor. He then paid 4 times what the tractor was worth and came here complaining. Auction company probably ran him on purpose to recover some of the time they spent with him on the phone. Some guys you just can't help.

You and I are the same age (per one of your posts) and even though I am new to the Forum and have only been part time farming 25 years, I have learned a few things to be shared with those who haven't been exposed. Obviously we enjoy being here to help and that's what this is all about. Besides, as I was remarking to my wife this morning, I don't have to get out in the weather and go to the coffee shop to visit with friends. I can have my coffee at home and enjoy the fellowship on www.ytmag.com Mark

Mark: Only one problem I see with all of this, now I want to get out and meet all these many fine friends in person. Of course coupled with that I am a geography nut as it applies to rural North America. So there is a method to my madness, when I get in your area, I can look you up to make sure I haven't missed anything interesting. This is still a vast land when it comes to people, ag practices, cultural practices, land and geological formations. Travel like is so much more interesting when you have someone you know to stop and pay visit. Way better than tourist info bureaus. And we can still enjoy that coffee every morning while we shoot the breeze.

As with everything - BUYER BEWARE!!!

I've looked at come-a-longs on Ebay several times. At least one seller has a shipping and handling charge of $25.99. Wouldn't be a very good deal for the buyer, considering a new one at the farm store is around $20.

Your right Irv, there is alot of pure old junk on E-bay. Just like going to a live auction you can easily see that many people are willing to pay more for junk than it's really worth. Still if you know what your looking at and what it's worth you can get some really good deals too. I got a set of impact tools that was worth $8000 for $1000, several Enerpac rams worth nearly $1000 for less than $500, a chain sling that runs around $200 for $45, etc etc etc. By the same token I've been able to sell several items that I had bought and repaired for a good bit over what I had in them, but the person buying them still got one heck of a deal. Like PT Barnum used to say, "There's a sucker born every minute" and as long as your smart enough not to be a sucker, then E-bay is a great place. Just my .02....Do I hear .04??? How about .03....Going, Going.....

rusty's right. I check it usually twice a day, sections that I know that I know most of the products. This year, so far I got $800 worth of Delmorst equipment for under $300 and last spring I got a $5000 ATV for $3800. I've also done well selling (and a few folks have gotten some bargains from me). One guy got a water pump for $30 that's got a $100 motor on it, another got a $600 elevator for $50. Not so good for me (but I didnt have anything in either one). I have moved about $3000 in used parts this year.

Sorry, its Delmhorst. They make (IMHO) the best digital moisture testing equpiment for hay. What I got was a complete hand held unit with all probes, full set of baler bale chamber interfaces, and pin cables for integration to a propionic acid injector/data feed to a laptop. I had a full set very similar to this and lost it in a tractor fire.
