OT: firewood, anybody ever have it stolen

The reason I ask is that I got about 2 full cords stacked up about 100' from my garage just off the driveway and if somebody drove up my driveway with a truck they could just load up and leave. I spent time last fall splitting this by hand and would hate to have it ripped off. I have never heard of anybody stealing firewood but I wanted to ask you guys.

And then there is the story about the guy that kept finding his wood stolen. It went on for a long time and he couldn't find the thief. He took a hollow chunk and packed it with black powder. Not long after that he found out who the thief was.

Brad: A farmer near where I used to live was heading to the barn for evening feeding, when he noticed a police cruiser parked by his commercial Christmas tree lot about 1/2 mile off. He went back to house for binoculars, sure enough an officer in uniform loading two trees in trunk of police cruiser. He beconed his hired hand to get the chain saw and meet him at the pickup. They followed the cruiser back to town, into a nice little sub-division. Officer got out of car, placed the trees in his garage and closed the door, then went in the house. The farmer then got out his chain saw, went to front lawn and cut down a 6' blue spruce and headed for the truck with it. The officer came out, yelling what in H#$% do you think you are doing. Farmer turned to him and said," Sir you got two from me, I just got one from you, Merry Christmas." He got in his truck and drove back to the country. I understand he did erect the blue spruce in his living room for Christmas, and yes all his holliday guests did ask about the source of the tree. You see most had bought their tree from him, and wanted to know why they were never offered blue spruce.

found a 4 wheel toyota stuck in a water way loaded with some hickory i had cut. turns out it was 2 16 year olds. had parents come, law, and had a talk. seems it was criminal tresspass fro stealign the wood. agreed not to arrest them if they put it back and furnished their own way to get out. all agreed to this and there was no more problem. and yes they had opened a gate with no tresspassign sign on it.

Yep.this year alone had 5 people(thiefs) tell me where the state owns and how they are allowed to take whatever they want from the state right-of-way.Key words,right of way.I still own it, just can't block access to it.Or so said the deputy,after one theif decided he was the law.We had some power line contractors,installing a new line just behind(yes)the states right of way.one man was found with his chainsaw across the fence sawing my locust posts into firewood.Several others felt the need to just stop and load up.I can't work that fast and have been gathering and piling it as weather allows,but still lost about 3 truckloads,maybe more.turns out one has a firewood business,and another has one of the larger farms in the area.He said he was doing me a favor by removing all that junky ol wood.None of them were needy,all were just greedy.Amazing how some jerks have tractors worth more than my whole place and hes gotta steal from me.Go figure.

I had sorta the opposite happen to me a couple years ago. Was awakened at dawn on a Saturday morning by a loud noise out front. Got up to investigate and discovered a large load (12 face cord or so) of slab wood and an empty dump truck sitting in the driveway. I managed to catch the driver before he took off.

Turned out the driver had delivered the load to the right house number but on the wrong street! He and his assistant then spent then spent a couple hours reloading the truck. They left me a half face cord or so of nice oak slabs for my "inconvenience".

My Wife sure makes My Wood Disappear. Seems Like i have a big supply For Her to Split & haul, Then She Puts it in The stove & Just Burns it up. Keeps me busy Just finding wood for her To Cut. But I Did get her a rubber tire Wheel barrow.

Policeman was off duty in Houston county Ga.last year and had a beer or two and decided to steal some packaged wood from a supermarket. They fired him for that one.

Never really stolen, but had to stop the neighbor from "borrowing". He asked if he could have some for a picnic campfire he was having. I said sure take all ya need, thinking he was having a one time get together at his house. Four weekends and a cord or so later I had to say something so I asked him if he would like to go with me to CUT wood sometime. He stopped having his weekend campfires after that.

I had alittle bit of sugarwood disappear off the end of one tier last summer, luckily they didn't take very much, I'm guessing they must have wanted some for a campfire. I don't really know why someone would want to steal it, it was just slab wood leftovers from a sawmill cut into 3ft lengths, there a quite a few mills owners trying to give their slabwood away, but they had to steal some. I'm more worried about my old iron, I'm worried somebodys gonna decide they need a carburator or something when I'm not around or in bed.

I sell firewood for campers at the state park and have had around 20% taken every year (this will be the fourth year) started at $2 bundle (around 15#'s to a bundle) I started and have raised the price to $4. now I average the $3 I wanted. have had as much as 25 bundles taken in one night. I have chased a few down to get money in the past.
Some people say they can trust people. a lot of the people don't pay for all they take, only part of it.

When I still lived at home our pile of split and stacked ( right against the house ) firewood disappeared while we were at church. We always figured it had to be someone who knew our pattern of never missing a Sunday. Probably not to far away either as it would have taken a couple loads.

I had the same problem with fish. I am amazed at what people will do for fish. Some are crazy.

I used to wonder, going down my road, if any of the cars I passed going to church were POACHERS.

My two sons and I cut up an old basswood tree that was hanging too far into the field. Cut and stacked it between two trees about 150' from a blacktopped road. Next morning the whole pile of gopher wood was gone. Hope they enjoyed the crappy wood.

I stole my own wood once, does that count? Wanted some pasture cleared out, so let a number of local folks cut wood, over several years time. In the meantime I also started cutting and burning wood. Out cutting one day I noticed a lot of 6 inch pieces scattered about the area, so I picked them up. A few months later my mail man asked who else was cutting there, since all his little pieces were gone. Said he cut some short for a fishhouse stove, and hadn't picked them up. Lucky for him, he could still get them from my wood pile. All in one spot, too.

Yeah its happened, poeple who were renting some land of ours would come in with a spreader, spread the load then on their way out they loaded the whole spreader full of wood. Needless to say I fixed the problem personally.

Just move the wood close to the garage and you probably won't have anything to worry about and alot less farther to go to get it when you need it.

Well I can't say it was stolen , used with out permission ,maybe? Five buddies and I fixed up an old horse barn into a cabin. Leased the timber,barn and coupe ponds from land owner . Was quite the place for hunting, fishing ,camping ,etc. Well as soon as we got the wood stove ( or should i say I) put in . Couple pof us started to cut and split wood fo rthe coming winter. Well out of 6 of us ,only two ever got any wood .Kinda like the grass hopper and the ant ! Everytime i went up to cabin there was no wood stocked inside ,the wood pile kept getting smaller . the two of us that cut the wood sai dheck with this ,,so we locked up wood in old horse stall. Next time up door busted off stall.Got to the point i was stock piling wood out in timber ,,didn't dare leave any around campfire ring ,,it'd be gone ,burnt up ,by next time made it up there. after several sessions of "he who cuts the wood , burns the wood " The other guys finally got the hint! got to the ponit one time i just took the chiminey pipe from stove with me when i'd go home. Wow ,,,place that was supposed to be a stress reliever was cause of more problems than ever thought of ! Between mowing keeping place clean ,dishes etc ..Well owner sold land ,,someone elses playground now... Got new place ,,new guys ,,hopefully none of the problems experianced in past !!!

Yup, I had three cords took right from the side of the garage. Wife saw him loadin' it. She hollers to me about it, but the game was on so I hollers back for her to go tell him to knock it off. Don't know how he did it, but he nicked me for three cords and took the wife too. Sure would have liked to get that wood back.

Not firewood but a cant. I was millig (bandmill) on an extension road. Snow storm comes in I pack it in leaving behind one 24"x24" x12 ft cant maple. Drive up the next morning its gone. Plow the road a day later (dirt) follow the etching the timber made in the road to the backside of a barn. A shady contractor -hooked to his tractor and dragged it to his place. Said he had my best interest in mind -- wanted to pop him.

Just a few cords, by those who bought but didn't pay for it. I suppose you could say it was stealing firewood when one Labor Day weekend, a guy stopped at our timber sale on national forest and said to the six people cutting up our logs that WAS NOT public firewood. Some lamely said they thought the forest service had cut all those trees for the public to get wood.

Hi Brad,

A few years back the wife said a pick-up pulled into the yard and a guy got out and knocked on the door. Since the wife didn't know the guy she didn't answer the door.

The guy backed his truck upto my mesquite pile for BB-Q'ing and started loading the bed. Wife waited till he had a good load then told him to start unloading.

It was the county dog catcher!!!

I called his boss and he fired the guy.

This wood will warm you for a few hours now, but after judgement day it will keep you warm for a LONG time. Think about it, are you that cold?

This reminds me of an incident a guy told me about years ago. Seems he kept missing wood from his pile from time to time and had no idea where it went or who was taking it. He bored a hole into the end of a stick of wood and filled it with black gunpowder, and plugged the hole. Wasn't long after when the neighbor's stove blew up.

O.Kay here is a true story about a fellow I know. He had a hunting cabin up in northern Pa and in the summer he and some of his hunting buddies would cut firewood and stack it on the porch of the cabin and then in the winter ( deer season ) when they would go up for two weeks of hunting they would use the wood for heating and cooking however two years in a row by hunting season the wood was gone. He had it and couldent find out who took it so they cut a bunch of wood and stacked it on the porch BUT ONE log they drilled a 1 inch hole about 6inches into the end of the log and filled it with black powder and pluged the end with wood filler and put it in the pile of firewood! That next hunting season when they whent up to the cabin they stoped at the general store to get some supplies and asked the owner if there was anything new going on and he said they had some excitement in the valley so and sos cabin blew up! Gess they found out who was taking the wood!!! JUST MARK the wood that up rig up tho so you dont use it!

My wife's uncle did almost the same thing with his wood except he used a short stick of dynamite. He never lost anymore wood.

It's not as cool as t.n.t. but some of the locals in N.H. have been known to spray paint the ends. This helps to prove your case if you have your suspicions. Good luck.

Yes, Brad it happens. My brother sold the mature lumber from his woods a few years back. The contractor corded out and stacked the limbs in the woods as part of the contract. Guess what? Neighbors bordering the north side of the woods created "hiking trails" in their part of the woods, right up to the stacked woodpiles! This was soon after they destroyed the line fence that my great-grandfather built to mark property lines in the woods many years ago! Sad, but true. Don

No one dishonest on the www., is there, so you are all right.
Of course there is always the potential for getting it nicked. If you are that worried, put it somewhere less obviously accessible, or more obviously visible to you.

I left a couple of loads on the farm once that were stolen. They had been split. Red Oak! I knew who it was. Withdrew his permission to cut wood on the farm.

How about putting yer firewood back behind the barn, then putting a "Sweet" pile out in plain sight. Then get several 5 gallon buckets of liquified cow poop, dump it on the logs. This after ya load several with black powder. If they can stand the smell to steal it, they sure won't know what to do with the "Boom"! Can't ya just see them, staggering around, with a finger trying to clean out their ears? And, painting the ends is a good idea. Just stack it with those ends away from the road! Had a 5 foot fiberglass frog stolen from my yard one time. Got him back o.k., except he had ear-muffs and a scarf for the cold weather! Now, if i set an old mower out for the garbage man, nobody will take it--they figure if i set it out--it's junk! Good! And nothing gets swiped!

Never had any wood stolen as we are all fenced in and it's too close to the dogs anyway.
Once put an old lawnmower out for the trash man and after two pickups and it still there, I put a for sale sign on it and it disappeared the first night.

We never lost any firewood, but did have a 300 gal. gravity feed gas tank on a stand for the tractors, Seemed like they were getting less and less hrs between loads of gas. So one weekend we put in two gal. of water, Nearly every one attended church in our farm area. Surprise, one sunday noon came home and there sat my cousins olds in the drive, 4 five gal. cream cans in the back seat with gas and the car stalled!!!!!

I worked with a guy at the New Holland store in Waco TX in the early 80's prior to joining the military. He had bought a motor home to use on fishing and camping trips with his family. It had two fuel tanks and only one holding tank for the lavatory. He decided that he needed more holding tank than fuel tanks so he converted one of the fuel tanks to use as a holding tank.

One morning as he was going to his car to go to work he noticed a gas can lying in the drive way. On further investigation, he found the cap was removed and a siphon hose was sticking out of one of the "fuel" tanks (the one converted to a holding tank). He said about five feet up the drive was a spot of puke, and on the street by his mail box was another spot of puke. For some reason I don't think that this thief was stealing anymore gas from people.
